    Introduction

I’m sure if you’re reading this book, I don’t have to tell you about the disappointment and ramifications of a failed marriage. My divorce was devastating. Imagine a sink hole. Even if you try to put something in a sink hole without properly correcting the root of its cause, you’re doomed for failure. I returned to God, my creator, to replace the void created from my divorce with wholeness. As I began to heal and grow as an individual, I found love again. This is the story of our blended family. Blended families are created when at least one of the child(ren) in a family is from a previous relationship or marriage.

Each and every person in a blended family is affected by a failed relationship. Unfortunately, in today’s society, failed marriages are common. The United States has the highest divorce rate of any country. The majority of those divorced eventually remarry, many forming blended families. Moreover, blended families account for the majority of families in 2010 when we consider families where fathers have joint custody but their child(ren) primarily live with their mothers.

According to family and marriage statistics of the United States Bureau of the Census, 2006, more than half of blended families are predicted to fail due to the complexities facing the blended family. Studies and current divorce rates indicate the high level of difficulty couples face when becoming a union of two. Imagine our difficulty joining together our family of six. The complexities are enormous but serve to strengthen our family bond.

     One question changed my life

In the beginning of my marriage to James, we really encountered some difficult hurdles to overcome – church, finances, roles and responsibilities, etc. Since divorce was off

the table, I began to seek God to change my challenging marital situation. God used a friend to remove all inhibitions stalling my marriage from becoming better than anything I could personally plan for my life. One question she asked me changed my life and marriage for the better - forever.

If God can raise Jesus from the dead to give the world eternal life through salvation, she said, "why not trust your marriage to God since He created the covenant of marriage?

I asked God to show me His plan for my life and my new marriage. As I began to approach marriage from a Godly perspective, the results were phenomenal. Each one of us – me, James and our four children (Nacole, Brittney, Brion and Bria) – became what I can only describe as the epitome of a strong family, characteristic of God’s love.

While every family will be different, all marital relationships require nurturing if they are to be successful. I desire not only the success of my marriage, but the success of yours as well. Now, allow me to introduce you to our blended family, the Youngs, and the lessons we’ve learned through divine revelations. I encourage you to take the time to complete the Make it Personal activities I’ve included at the end of each chapter. Some of the activities may take a little longer to complete than others. Many will require the participation of other family members, especially your spouse. Delay moving to the next chapter of the book until you finish its Make it Personal section. This will be beneficial since many of the chapters build onto one another.

Your willingness and hard work will be well worth the effort at the end of our journey together. May God bless you as you strive to build a strong, long-lasting relationship and family.

Lesson One: Often times we consider divorce an adult matter. However, children are equally affected and negatively impacted by unsuccessful marriages.

One of the first lessons to learn from your previous relationship is that the dissolution of marriage is outside of God’s will. Therefore divorce is not an option in your current marriage. This only means you are willing to approach any challenges you may face in your marriage with a resolve to remain steadfast and unmovable while you trust God to move on your behalf. I understand this level of trust is easier said than done. Believe God’s promises for believers without restraining God to human limitations. After all, God sacrificed His only Son because God loved the world. God alone had the power to raise Jesus from the dead. Remember the question that changed my life and marriage? Now
