About this ebook
Wherever there are people, there is greed and sacrifice; ingratitude and indebtedness; hatred and love as well as humor and poignancy. Woven around these emotions are seven short stories set in contemporary India from Prem Rao. They feature a cross section of society including property developers, Government servants and Indian Army officers. They are young, they are old and they are real.
Let's meet some of them......
For Lokesh the property developer, the driving force is the desire to get ahead, at any cost. He sees an easy prey in Satish, a lower rung Government official whose property he is determined to acquire for a fraction of its real value. Lokesh does not know that Satish carries the guilt of having cheated his family to get the property transferred to his name. Both though have one desire in common. They want the blessings of God.
When Bhoopathy is stricken with cancer shortly after his retirement, there seems to be no way he would be able to raise the huge amount required for his treatment. Until unexpectedly, someone steps in from the past.
Falling in love is by itself not usually fraught with danger. However, if you are Capt. Mohit Kapoor, an Indian Army officer and the girl in question is a beautiful local girl in the Kashmir Valley, you could soon find yourself in an explosive situation.
Nataraj's inability to be assertive results in his brother virtually dumping their old parents onto him. This results in friction within his own family especially since he has not consulted his wife. He is one of the many who have not learnt that in life: “Not saying ‘No’ means saying ‘Yes’.”
Her youthful vibrancy makes Gowri, the trekker, take risks to race ahead and reach the mountain top before her friends. When she gets lost in the jungles following a thunderstorm, she stumbles upon three half-drunk thugs who pursue her full of lust. The rains which she cursed so much for making her get lost in the first instance now come to her rescue.
A man is struck by a sudden and wholly unexpected heart attack. His first. Several events help him get specialist treatment in that critical period known as the "Golden Hour". To know what it means for him to get a fresh lease of life, you would need to read the story.

HE SEES EVERYTHING
Any calls while I was having my bath?
asked Lokesh, putting on the fresh clothes laid out for him by his wife, Anandi. He strapped on his all- gold Rolex. He felt clean after the bath. Some one had told him at the gymnasium where he worked out that a bath was most relaxing. He found this very strange. He for one kept thinking about his business deals all the time, even in the bath. The question of relaxing did not arise. On top of everything else, Anandi was bothering him again with her pet subject of having children. Where was the time?
Calculations took up most of his time these days. He went into one more of his calculating sprees. 7.35 to the MLA (the scoundrel was becoming more greedy by the day), 6 plots in the new site, may be 100 apartments there? No, make it 125, by squeezing in more with lower ceiling heights. Even @ 20 per apartment (Rs. Lakhs, of course) that would be Rs. 300 million. He was excited about an old bungalow he had set his eyes on. It was great in terms of location but the neighborhood was rather seedy. So what, he thought, haven’t they minted money from run down textile mills in Mumbai? Today, here he was in the famous temple town of Tirupati to pray to the Lord for a few big deals in the offing. There was no need to ask. He knew what Anandi was praying for.
Meanwhile in Bangalore, Satish had got back home from work. Are you sure you want to go ahead with this?
asked Lakshmi, rather timidly after first ascertaining her husband’s mood. Freshly made idlis and steaming hot filter coffee had mellowed his mood. Appa and Amma were so attached to this old house,
she began nervously, is it right for us to think of selling it so soon after they are no more?
At any other time he would have snarled at her but the idlis and coffee merely made him say with a smirk, But they are not here now, are they? I am not selling the house with them living here.
How much longer can I work like this?
continued Satish. The cost of living in Bangalore is increasing by the day. Being a lower level Government official is no fun. Every one seems to be making pots of money, either from the IT/BPO industry or from real estate.
Some of his colleagues seldom came to work. They were busy making money elsewhere, mainly as middlemen
