About this ebook

Todd Mayfield's life was hardly a special one, nor was he a very special person. Then, one day, he was bitten by a zombie. From that moment on, his entire existence was to be forever altered. First there was nothing. He was as mindless as his undead brethren. Then he began to remember. He began to rediscover the person he had once been. And that is when the nightmare truly began.

Daniel and Deanna Johnson are a very ordinary couple living in Bolton, Ontario. They each have very ordinary jobs and spend their evenings having dinner and playing Scrabble with the neighbors. But they, too, harbor secrets. Both are more than they seem. Both are fugitives from the United States government. Because what Denise Luco and Lance Naughton did on the day of the Red Blizzard, bringing a zombie back to life, has forever marked them.

A child of the movies, I was always consumed by fantastic stories told by others and translated into adventures to be retold by me through the action figure medium. As I grew older, I put the action figures away and moved into the realm of role playing. Though I never outgrew role playing, I certainly don't have the time for it anymore. Since I was eleven years old, I've been pouring almost every ounce of creative energy I have into writing.I graduated college in 1993 with a degree in computer science. I tried my hand at programming for a couple of years and found it pretty unsatisfying. I later became a partner at a comic book store, where I spent several years. Though it wasn't a financial success, the experience I gained from running the store and the people that I met (many of whom I'm still in touch with today) was priceless. After leaving the store, I settled into a career of teaching. I still teach at a public high school in New York. Ironically, I've picked up computer programming again, which is what I mostly teach.I've been writing the whole time.I released my first book electronically in 2010. Forty Leap was a turning point for me in both style and story building. The Book of Revelations, which was written earlier but released later, was sort of a midway point between the writer I was and the writer I've become. I experimented with a very odd style and a story that employed diverse characters and controversial situations. In September 2010, I released the first installment of Zombies! Zombies! has been a tremendous success for me that came very close to being made into a television series. Since Zombies!, I have written a five part miniseries called Castes and have been working on developing tabletops games, the first of which, ApocalypZe, was published in early 2014.Now, 6 years later, a 3rd Zombies! series is due to be released in September of 2016.

    What has come before.

On a warm afternoon in September, humanity learned that it was sharing the world with zombies. As the zombie population grew and the human population diminished, the authorities fought for stability. Though there was clearly no eradicating the undead infestation, there was a middle ground to held. The world had changed, for certain. But it had not ended.

Humanity’s greatest strength is its ability to adapt. So now did humanity adapt to its new environment. While some people saw the zombies as victims that needed to be protected, others discovered a profit to be made. Still others sought conquest.

On a frozen day in the middle of winter, an army of the undead was unleashed upon the City of New York. Caught between the snow and the zombies, many citizens of the city fought and died that night. When the dawn came and the zombie army had been put down or had disappeared into the cracks of the streets, New York still stood. But the world had changed yet again.

Just a short time before, scientists at the Arthur Conroy Memorial Hospital facility had discovered the existence of intelligent zombies. One, Todd Mayfield, had escaped and was loose in the city. Another, Zoe Koplowitz, had actually spoken. Captain Lance Naughton of the NYPD and Doctor Denise Luco rescued Zoe from the facility. Dr. Luco resuscitated her, literally brought her back to life. But the infection still raged inside of her and claimed her second life. Now on the run, Dr. Luco and Captain Naughton burned the body and headed north to Canada.

A scream awakened him from a deep sleep. He’d been dreaming about horses. He loved horses. They were such majestic animals. His parents had taken him to the rodeo once. His favorite part had been the man on the bucking bronco. It was a toss-up as to whether he admired the man or the horse more. In his dream, he’d been riding the horse. He’d never actually done so but the dream seemed so real. He could feel the ache in his legs as the animal carried him across the open plains. He could feel the bond they shared, man and beast. They weren’t one controlling the other. They were a team, in synch with one another.

And then a scream awakened him.

Perturbed, eight year old Todd Mayfield pulled himself out from under his thin blanket. The heater at the foot of the bed rattled. It was Friday night which meant his mom didn’t have work the next day. It was the only day that she didn’t have work and she liked to sit up late on Fridays and watch videos. Sometimes she screamed with laughter and sometimes she just screamed. It depended on the movie. Todd couldn’t really recall the sound that had awakened him so he wasn’t sure which type of scream it had been.

Teddy bear in hand, Todd padded out of his room on bare feet. They lived in a three bedroom apartment in one of the worst neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Todd’s mom had three part time jobs and earned anywhere from eight to twelve dollars an hour. She insisted on having Saturdays off so that she could spend the time with her three sons. Todd’s two older brothers, Freddy and Israel, wished that she would work Saturdays, too. Freddy was almost fifteen. He was the oldest. He had three girlfriends and two connections for pot. Todd had tried it once and nearly collapsed. Freddy and his friends had laughed their asses off at that. Israel was only twelve. He was a smart kid who did the right thing in every situation except when it came to Todd. Though Freddy was mischievous, Israel was downright evil. He considered his little brother to be this experimental plaything. Todd had once awakened to find his brother coating his toes with pancake syrup. Todd had jumped out of bed and run screaming for his mom. To that day, he still didn’t know what the purpose of that had been.

Checking the hallway for any signs of his brothers, Todd moved forward toward the living room area. The couch was situated with its back to the hallway, so his mom wouldn’t see him coming. It was bad Feng Shui, but she didn’t know about such things and neither did anyone else in the Mayfield family. The first thing Todd noticed was that his mother wasn’t alone. She had a date. Though Todd couldn’t see the guy’s face, he was sure it must have been Ernst. His mom saw Ernst every once in a while. He’d come over on a Friday night and watch a movie with her and then stay the night. Todd actually liked it when Ernst stayed over because it meant french toast and sausage in the morning.

On the television screen was a man with a frightened look on his face. There was some dirt streaked across his cheek and he was carrying something in his hands. All of a sudden another man jumped out of the shadows. The two fought and Todd noticed something weird about the second man. He wasn’t right. There was blood all over him and the skin on his face had been torn. He was moaning and grunting and trying to bite the first man. But he was no match for him. The first man brought the thing that he was carrying forward, revealing it to be a nasty machete. The machete cut through the second man’s head and blackish blood splattered everywhere. The fight was over and the first man rested his hands on his knees and breathed heavily. Then the camera panned out and Todd could see that the man was surrounded by other people, all just as gruesome as the one he’d killed. There was a shot of the man’s terrified face just before the horde set upon him and began tearing him to bits and eating him.

Todd opened his mouth to scream when he felt someone grab him from behind and cover his mouth. He was dragged backward. Silently struggling, he dropped his Teddy. When he was finally shoved into his room, he saw Freddy standing there.

Why are you out of bed?

I heard mom scream. I just went to see.

You need to let ma be, Freddy said. Otherwise Israel might sit you down and make you watch a whole zombie movie like that one.

Todd shook his head. Uh uh! I don’t want to see nothin’ like that never again.
