    Reading the Tarot

    Introduction

The symbolism within the 78 cards in a Tarot deck covers all aspects and experiences of our lives; a reflection of external influences and happenings and what lies deep within. The 22 cards of the Major Arcana illustrate the Fool’s journey, a metaphor of life’s journey, each card representing a stage on that path and experiences we all go through in our emotional and spiritual development. This does not mean we can only experience one of these cards at a time and neither does it say that once we’ve gone through experiences represented by a certain card they can’t be repeated. There will actually be periods of our lives when we may be going through a number of important events and encounters. At times such as this, a number of cards from the Major Arcana may show up in a reading. Other times when things are quiet or continuing without incident, the Major Arcana will be silent.

There are four suits in the Tarot: Cups, Pentacles (or Coins), Swords and Wands. These are indicative of certain areas in life. Cups can relate to creativity, love, fertility and family. Swords might relate to intellectual activities such as debate and argument, often but not always signifying areas of tension. Pentacles may speak of material gain, money and the ability to earn while Wands refer to ambition, work, challenge and action.

There are many ways to read the Tarot and Tarot readers will follow their own preferred rituals. Just as there are many different spreads to choose from when doing a reading. Eventually you will find a one that you’re comfortable with or you might even make up a one of your own. There are no set rules in the Tarot. Follow your intuition. What this book focuses on are the general meanings of each card and the aim is to get you thinking about the symbolism, pictures and colours in the Tarot and what they might mean to you.

It is important to note that there are as many different interpretations of the Tarot as there are readers. That’s because the more a person becomes familiar with each Tarot card, they will eventually recognise how certain cards will turn up at specific times in their lives or in the lives of those they do readings for. One card can come to mean something quite different to one person as it does to another.

There is hundreds of different Tarot decks on the market and as your ability to read the Tarot develops you should go with the one or few that you are particularly drawn to.

Each card is given an interpretation below to give you an idea on the general meaning behind the symbolism of that card. The more you read the tarot, the more in tune you will become to your cards. It also has to be said that the cards should be read as a whole and not individually within a spread. If some contradict each other, consider what this might mean. Could it be two very different experiences coming up in a short space of time or could it be that one card will dilute the impact of the other? Trust your intuition. Imagine the Tarot is like a mirror reflecting what’s important about a person’s life at the present moment in time. This reflection might touch on the past, portray the present or reveal future possibilities. As you look into that mirror, lose yourself in the image and allow your psychic self to guide you on its true reflection.

The meanings of the cards below are described as if you are doing a reading for yourself: the perfect person to experiment on, as you learn about the Tarot.
