Alan Delph, 54, first suspected that his luck had run out when a sinister figure stepped out of the darkness in front of him, brandishing a large cudgel. The figure wore an all-enveloping cowled black robe, whilst a black mask completely concealed the face.
By the saints!
Delph cried. Who or what are you?
"The last thing you’ll ever see!" a man’s voice spoke from behind the mask. He swung his stick at the man.
Delph leapt out of the way. His assailant swung again: Delph dodged, this time coming up under his assailant’s reach. He tried grappling with him.
The cowled figure touched his cudgel lightly against him. Although the blow had no force, Delph felt himself thrown through the air, as if electrocuted. He landed a good ten feet from his attacker.
Delph rolled over and stared at the figure. He scrambled to his feet and started to run.
The moon and the stars provided the only illumination as Delph fled across the countryside. "If I can only make it to the trees," he thought, perhaps I can lose him…
Suddenly, a second dark figure appeared in front of him, dressed
