    Chapter 1: Introduction

    Early in my administrative career I was interviewing teacher candidates for a History teaching position in a secondary school. One of the candidates had been volunteering in classrooms in the school for some time and had developed a good rapport with staff and students. He seemed to have a good grasp on what was necessary to land a job. However, his interview was a complete failure. He was not able to articulate his passion for students and outline effective strategies for student success. The interview team had to score him extremely low on his answers, which caused him (one of the best candidates) to not get the job. Because of his poor interview, he was not able to progress to the practical teaching stage of the hiring process.

    He did do one thing right after his interview. He asked me what he could do better next time to help him improve his interview skills. The volunteer had not spent enough time practicing or preparing himself for the interview. This is one of the biggest mistakes that teacher candidates make when going through the interview process.

    I worked with this teacher candidate in order to help him obtain a job and improve his interview skills. We met on three separate occasions and reviewed the steps in creating a good cover letter and resume, as well as how to prepare for the interview process. We performed mock interviews on several occasions in order to further improve his skills and demonstrate what he had practiced and learned.

    A few weeks later I received an email from this person letting me know he had received a full time permanent position with another school. He attributed his success to
