Beloved: The Life of a "House Wolf"

About this ebook
My purpose in writing this book is threefold. First, I want to pay tribute to my loving companion of ten years. She was as special as they come. This little book is the best way to say "thank you" for the years of joy that she gave us during her precious lifetime.
Secondly, I hope that my tales and anecdotes will entertain you as well as educate you a little about these often misunderstood creatures.
Finally, please take any of my warnings of wolf dog traits very seriously. I recommend that anyone who is not totally familiar with wolf dogs not get one. A wolf dog is a high-maintenance pet. I can only point to the many wolf dog rescues that exist where pets who didn't "work out" end up.
Furthermore, the owning a wolf dog in many cities, counties, and states is now illegal. Check with your state's Department of Fish and Game for details.

Wolf Dogs and Me
Back in the early days of the Internet, I authored a web site entitled Raising a Wolf Hybrid as a Pet.
In those days, there weren’t many web sites about these controversial animals and I got tons of traffic to my site. For the most part, people loved my site and I struck up many correspondences with wolf lovers and other wolf dog owners.
After about a year, I started getting hate email
from people who chastised me for having a wolf dog as a pet and told me that all of the information on my web site was false or that I was an idiot. I eventually discontinued the web site and decided to keep to myself. The purpose of my site had been to serve as a testimonial for my beloved pet – nothing more, nothing less.
These days, if you do a look up for wolf dogs
or wolf hybrids
on any Internet search engine, you will undoubtedly uncover a long list of resources. The web sites that I prefer ones that present facts and both sides of the controversy of having a wolf dog as a pet. There are very educational web sites sponsored by various wolf rescue organizations that are full of facts and links to information on current government laws regarding owning a wolf dog. You won’t have any trouble finding them.
In the chapters that follow, I will do my best to explain why I adopted a wolf dog. However, it is important that I tell you I am very aware of both sides of the controversy of having one as a pet. In fact, if anyone were to ask me if they should adopt a wolf dog, in all likelihood, I would tell them that they shouldn’t.
Wolf dogs are NOT the same as domestic dogs and you need to remember that. Wolf dogs can be socialized but being socialized will never take the place of being domesticated. Socialization will take much time and effort on your part – and not every wolf dog can be socialized well enough to be a good pet. This is why so many of these animals have been relegated to wolf dog rescues across the United States, at best. At worst, they have been destroyed.
Even if the sweetest, most socialized wolf dog is a member of your family, always remember what you have.
Under no circumstances should it be out of the confinement of a kennel or a secure yard with a very high fence of 6’ to 8’. Some people have asked me if it’s O.K. to put one of those invisible electric shield fences in to confine their wolf dog. My answer: Are you kidding?
Never leave small children along with a wolf dog! There have been cases where a crying child caused the animal to
