    Chapter One

It was one party that Kate wished she had never attended. Jane, her best friend of seven years, was holding her twenty-fifth birthday bash at an exclusive wine bar in London.

'Kate, you better not let me down,' exclaimed Jane over the phone to Kate.

'No Jane, I won't,' replied Kate.

'I’ll see you at seven o'clock in Henry's on Saturday, and we’ll go on from there.'

    'Alright, sweetie, see you then.'

Kate was usually excited about birthdays, especially as every time Jane and she went out they always managed to have fun. Kate met Jane whilst they were studying for their degrees at Music College in I99I. Jane, a flautist, and Kate, an up-and-coming composer, hadn't seen each other in four months. Kate had just had her new work Te Deum premiered in New York and in Paris.

She had started to make a name for herself and Jane was proud of her best friend. Jane couldn't wait to see her, and tell her all about her engagement to Darren, as well as catching up with life in general.

Deep down she knew Kate wouldn't be happy about the engagement, so she decided to get Darren to invite some of his friends from the gym where he worked out.

'Maybe that will cheer her up,' murmured Jane.

'She has to accept that you cannot remain single for ever,' said Darren. 'It will be hard for her at first, considering that she's an up-and-coming prolific composer.

    'I know,' replied Jane.

'So I’ll only introduce her to my finest friends.'

'Knowing Kate, Darren, she's rather choosy about who she is seen with, because she finds it hard to trust anyone, especially non-musicians and artists in general.'

'Alright, we will just have to see how things go for her. But Jane darling, don't worry, she’ll have a great time. Trust me!'

Soon it was Jane's birthday. Jane and Darren were excited about announcing their engagement, and Jane couldn't wait to catch up with Kate. Four months seemed a lifetime for them both. So much had happened and Jane was looking forward to revealing it all.

Seven o'clock had now arrived. Kate walked in looking absolutely stunning. Jane was impressed by the way she looked. Kate wore an emerald evening gown that she bought in. New York. It matched her green eyes and her long blonde hair.

'Oh my, Kate, you look wonderful.'

'Thank you, Jane. Happy birthday and here's a little something from New York for you.'

    'Thank you, Kate.'

Jane, opening up the box, liked the gift Kate bought her - a little statue of a woman playing the flute and a treble clef hair clip which Jane could use to put up her long blonde hair, when she played the flute in concerts.

'Well, Jane, how have things been for you, are you still playing in the London Contemporary Orchestra?'

'Yes but I didn't get the principal flute audition, as I was not at my best on the day, so I have to stick with playing second flute for the time being.'

'I’m sorry to hear that; well, what else has happened since I last saw you?'

'Not a lot Kate, except, Do you remember I was telling you all about my last boyfriend Darren?'

'I think so, wasn't he the one you met when I was last in London, who works in the City?'

'Yes, well, Kate, I have something to tell you about Darren and me.'

What's that? No, don't tell me, you're pregnant and expecting his baby!'

'No, Kate, it's nothing like that! He's asked me to marry him and I said yes.'

    'Congratulations! Where is he?'

    'He's over there!'

Jane and Kate began to walk over towards the bar where Darren was standing with his friends.

    'Kate, do you remember Darren?'

    'Yes, I do. Hello Darren.'

'Hello Kate, what would you like to drink?'

'Oh, just a glass of red wine, thank you. I believe congratulations are in order - so have you set a date yet?'

'No Kate, but when we do, you'll be the first to know.'

Kate soon started to feel out of place. On the surface she was happy that Jane was to be married.

Yet, deep down she wished it could be how it was four months ago.

Kate continued making polite conversation - even to Darren's friends. But she found it all rather boring. As Kate followed the others to the arranged party bash at the exclusive wine bar, close to Henry's in Piccadilly, she caught a glimpse of a man looking out of the window in the bar. Ignoring him, she went to sit down with a large glass of red wine and waited for one of Darren’s friends to entertain her further.

'I must go to the ladies,' said Kate eagerly, and got up from her seat and went over to the man who'd caught her eye as he walked in. Kate found the young man very handsome, he had dark hair, slim and very trendily dressed.

'Excuse me, are you waiting for someone?'

    'No,' he replied.

Would you care to join my friends and me in a little birthday celebration and an engagement?'

'I would love too. Would you like a drink?'

'Um, a large glass of red wine, please.'

    'I’ll bring it straight over.'
