About this ebook

Ghostly Tales by Sheri L. McGathy is a collection of four short ghost stories set on the American prairie. They first made their debut in the anthology Trespassing Time. The stories range from the humorous to the scary, with ghosts that might make you smile, cause your heart to sigh, perhaps bring a tear to your eye, or maybe, just maybe, will give you pause as you pass an old cemetery.

In "The Graveyard Dance" you discover that perhaps in the end, you really can go home. "Maxie" proves that love between a man and his dog can endure beyond death.
"What's a Ghost to Do?" takes a humorous look at the perils of haunting in today's society while "Forgotten, But Not Gone," serves as a warning to the living to not take what rightfully belongs to the dead.

About Sheri L. McGathy“Born in the Buckeye state, I was uprooted in 1971 and replanted amongst sunflowers, tornadoes, and college football. It’s a good life.” ~ Sheri L. McGathyWho am I?During the weekdays, I’m a Graphic Arts Coordinator/Copy Editor in prepress. In the evenings and weekends, I’m a writer...or I try to be. Sometimes that is debatable.I'm often asked why I write fantasy, and I usually answer that fantasy, to me, evokes the wonder of dreams and unfettered possibilities. It can be filled with fanciful pleasures or unimaginable fears—all the things we believed in without question when we were kids.Fantasy is Santa and pixie dust, unicorns with long golden horns and white flowing manes. Fantasy is the monster that lurked in the shadows beneath your bed when you were little. Fantasy is fantastical and holds the promise that wishes just might come true if only we dare to believe.I write fantasy because I believe in the magic.~:.*.:~~:.*.:~May the magic always brighten your world~:.*.:~~:.*.:~

    The Graveyard Dance

Will drove slowly past the vacant buildings. He hadn't been back to New Hope in over seventy years, and by the looks of the place, neither had anyone else. The town was a shell of its former self, now nothing more than a few decaying buildings caught in the shadows of a dying day.

Nothing here but the ghosts of faded dreams. He sighed. Over the years, he'd developed a habit of talking to himself. It made him feel less alone.

When he reached the edge of town, he turned left. Everything about the area had changed or been remade by time. He feared his memory could no longer be counted upon to recall correctly. He took the first dirt road he came to and inched the car forward, hoping to see anything that looked familiar.

He glanced at his watch. Sun won't set for a few more hours—there's time. The old cemetery has to be around here somewhere. He tightened his swollen fingers on the steering wheel, ignoring the pain. It just had to be here.

To his left, he could see a field that had once been bordered by a limestone wall, but now all that remained were a few rock piles half buried in weeds. He pulled to the side of the road and shut off the ignition. Something about this place drew him.

He got out of the car and stared beyond the field to a line of cottonwood trees. His heart fluttered in his old chest. Could it be? Had he found it again after all these years?

The prairie grass rustled against his pant legs as he made his way through the field. A hot, humid breeze pushed against his back, but it offered no relief from the heat. Soon, he was panting.

He stopped and mopped the sweat from his brow with a handkerchief, then continued. When he reached the trees, he paused to bask in their cool shade. He'd forgotten how hot Kansas could be in early June.

Beyond the trees lay another field of tall grass rippling in the late day breeze, but no sign of what he hoped to find.
