Chapter One

I nursed the scotch-rocks like it was the last drink I was ever going to have instead of just the first for the night, twirling the glass and the golden liquid on its paper napkin like a kid’s toy. More than likely, it was going to be the drink I remembered most in a long line of drinks, followed by picking up some blonde — they were always blondes — and taking her back to my big house in my Porsche for some fast, sloppy sex and then uncomfortable good-byes.

Around me, the party atmosphere of the Danny’s Crib Lounge, combined with the music from too many speakers, kept the noise level just under that of a jet taking off. I had been lucky tonight to find a place at the bar. Usually I ended up standing, drink in hand, pretending to actually talk to someone I mostly couldn’t hear.

But tonight was special. That’s what my six co-workers from the legal department had told me. I had closed negotiations on one of the company’s biggest deals today, opening up a wildlife refuge for my company’s oil rigs to go in and drill. Tomorrow, when the news got out, our stock would shoot up, the left-wing environmentalists would cry, I would get a bonus, and then I would go back to work on the next big deal.

But tonight I got to celebrate.

But I didn’t feel like celebrating anything.

Thirty-six years old and I had no idea
