    Summary

    ***

Have you ever heard a genuine criticism of Shakespeare?

In dozens of lectures since High School, I haven’t - Not one that wasn’t somehow complimentary

He and his characters are cultural icons, sacred cows

Society has many others & the ranking is fluid

Criticism is not allowed – No matter how objective, it’s seen as a vicious attack, rejected without serious consideration

His words are a gospel even when he is dead wrong

    ***

    Shakespeare the cultural icon

His utterances are part of the warp and woof of our culture

Only he’s wrong there – warp and woof are synonymous
