    Chapter 1: Introduction

Why date people you cannot marry? In selecting dates you want to avoid the rebellious, the contentious, the faithless, the barren, the poor, the immature, the unfriendly, and the stupid. No one can build long lasting relationships with these people; you must avoid them like plague.

In fact the struggle between man and woman started in the Garden of Eden and all through the scriptures we see that the struggle did not cease for any considerable time. The question this book tries to address is how can the sincere Christian man or woman avoid the mistakes of his or her predecessors? In 2 Timothy 3: 16 we see that the scripture is written for guidance. In trying to look at this problem the focus will be on certain characters in the Bible who had attributes that eventually led to the destruction of their respective families. In chapter two we will look at the life of Adam and the remaining seven chapters are dedicated to the lives of Eve, Delilah, Samson, Nabal, Jezebel, Elimelech and Vashti in that order.

    Chapter 2: Unproductive

Fertility is linked to a declining risk of divorce. In fact, each child a couple has reduces their risk of divorce by 20 percent (Kaplan, Lancaster, and Anderson 1998).

2Sa 6:23 And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death.

Two types of barrenness exist in the scriptures; natural and unnatural. Michal’s barrenness was the unnatural type; it was caused by her disdain for God. It was the only permanent barrenness recorded in the bible. It is the type no one can cure. Other cases of barrenness recorded in the scriptures were temporary; they were cured through divine intervention. However, beyond barrenness related to infertility barrenness also exist in other spheres of life. Unfruitfulness is also discussed in the case of unfaithful servant expounded by the Lord Jesus Christ himself. The full text of Michal’s story is hereby presented so the reader could have full access to the story.

2Sa 6:12 And they told King David, saying, Jehovah has blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God. And David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into the city of David with gladness. 2Sa 6:13 And it happened that when those who bore the ark of Jehovah had gone six steps, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings. 2Sa 6:14 And David danced before Jehovah with all his might. And David was girded with a linen ephod. 2Sa 6:15 And David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of Jehovah with shouting, and with the sound of the ram's horn. 2Sa 6:16 And it happened as the ark of Jehovah came to the city of David, Michal, Saul's daughter, looked through a window and saw King David leaping and dancing before Jehovah. And she despised him in her heart. 2Sa 6:17 And they brought in the ark of Jehovah and set it in its place in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it. And David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before Jehovah. 2Sa 6:18 And as soon as David had made an end of offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of Jehovah of Hosts. 2Sa 6:19 And he gave out among all the people, among all the multitude of Israel, to the women as well as men, to each one a cake of bread and one raisin-cake. And all the people departed, each one to his house. 2Sa 6:20 And David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, How glorious was the king of Israel today, who uncovered himself today in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovers himself! 2Sa 6:21 And David said to Michal, It was before Jehovah, who chose me before your father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of Jehovah, over Israel. And I danced before Jehovah. 2Sa 6:22 And I will be still lower than this, and will be base in my own sight. And of the handmaids of whom you have spoken, with them I shall be had in honor. 2Sa 6:23 And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child by David to the day of her death.

Barrenness in this instance is a carefully chosen word even though scientific studies reported by Kaplan, Lancaster, and Anderson (1998) showed that children significantly reduced the risk of divorce amongst married couples. The focus here is more on barrenness caused by rebellion although another portion of this book focused more on rebellion.

Michal was unproductive because she was irreverent, but the central message of the passage itself was obedience. God is a God of perfection and a careful study of the scriptures would reveal that God demands precision. When David decided to bring the Ark of God to Jerusalem, he got a few people together and asked them to bring the ark to Jerusalem without paying attention to what the scriptures said about moving the ark around. There were specific rules on how to move the Ark around but David disregarded them. The outcome was the agonizing death of Uzzah. The slaying of Uzzah became a temporary turning point for David; he decided there and then that he was not going to continue with his original plan. He chose to leave the Ark in the house of Obed-edom.

Ninety days after leaving the Ark in Obed-edom house report came to David that God has used the Ark that slayed Uzzah to bless Obed-edom. It was at that point that David got the message, it was not about the Ark, it was about obedience and it was about precision.

Men practically worship their wives at the expense of worshipping God. This is why some have decided to completely shut out the Holy Spirit because they cannot do his will
