101 Fun Facts About Mammals - Caitlind L. Alexander

Giant pandas are one of the most loved of all animals. Here are some fun facts you may not have known about giant pandas.

(Eric Kilby)

Fact 1: 99% of a panda’s diet is bamboo.

Giant pandas have a very special diet. They live on only one plant: bamboo.

While most animals eat a wide range of plants, a panda eats mostly bamboo. They will eat the entire plant, including leaves, stalk and roots. An adult panda will eat up to 40 pounds (18 kilograms) of bamboo every day.

Sometimes a panda will add honey, eggs, fish, leaves, fruits or vegetables to its diet, but this doesn’t happen very often.

(Chi King)

Fact 2: Pandas live in an area just slightly larger than the state of Delaware.

The last remaining pandas in the world are all living in one small area in Central China. They live in Sichuan, Gansu and Shanxi. They like to live in mountainous areas that are covered in bamboo forests.

Pandas used to live in a much larger part of China. Over time their habitat has been destroyed by people moving into their area. The people cut down the bamboo forests and use the land to grow crops.

Now there are just a few patches of bamboo forests left in their area. That makes it hard for the pandas to get together at mating season. That means that fewer and fewer pandas are being born in the wild.

No one knows exactly how many giant pandas are left in the world. Scientists think there are only about 1,000 to 2,000 of them left in the wild.

(Jeff Kubina)

Fact 3: Even though a panda’s diet is almost all plants, it is still considered to be a carnivore.

One of the reasons that giant pandas are considered to be bears is the shape of their teeth. They have the teeth of a bear, so they have been placed in the family of bears. Since all bears belong to the order Carnivora, a giant panda is technically considered a carnivore.

Giant pandas still have the guts of a bear. That means their bodies don’t digest plants very well, especially tough plants like bamboo. Most of the bamboo passes through their system without being digested.

To protect its stomach and guts from all the bamboo splinters, pandas have a lot of mucous coating everything. Mucous is another word for snot!

(Chris Palmer)

Fact 4: Pandas try not to move very fast.

Because bamboo does not have a lot of nutrition in it, panda bears don’t usually have a lot of energy. They spend a large part of their day lying around. When they do move, they like to move very slowly.

In order to get the nutrition it needs, a panda needs to eat for ten to twelve hours a day. It spends most of the rest of the day sleeping.

Pandas in zoos are often given special biscuits to add to their diet. These biscuits can have fruits, grains, and other nutritious things in them.

(Popofatticus)

Fact 5: A panda’s fur is waterproof.

Pandas live high up in the mountains of China in the bamboo forests. These forests are always getting rain. There is also a lot of mist in the forest.

In order to stay warm and dry, pandas have a thick coat of very soft fur. There are longer hairs that help to keep out the wind. There are also shorter hairs that help to keep the panda warm.

The panda’s skin puts out a lot of oil. This oil covers its fur and this makes its fur coat waterproof.

Since a panda’s fur is so soft and
