Chapter One: The Haiku Poet as a Rebel
In this brief study, I will examine the significance of the poetry of the Beat Generation in the development of the contemporary English language haiku. In order to do this effectively, I will look at several different aspects of the attitude and lifestyle of the Beats, and look at how these elements of their lives are reflected in their own style of haiku. By looking at the intricate relationship between the attitudes of the Beats and the attitudes encapsulated in their poetry, I will be able to judge the relevance of their particular method of writing haiku, as it sits in relation to the gradual East-West movement of Japanese poetry that has introduced haiku to the western world. The key elements of the ‘Beat lifestyle’ that I will focus on are the spiritual and counter-cultural elements, these aspects are profoundly reflected in their creative endeavours, and themselves are also very relevant to the spirit of haiku. By understanding these two aspects of the Beat attitude in their entirety, I will be able to comprehend more fully the position of the Beats poetry in the gradual development of the western haiku. In order to do this effectively, I will examine different components of the haiku form and assess how these components have developed through time and been influenced by the Beat Generation in order to produce contemporary haiku that remain true to the essential spirit of this form of verse.
In the Japanese Buddhist sect of Zen, or Ch’an, the haiku is revered for its terseness of expression and its succinct capturing of a single encounter. For the Zen Buddhists, the haiku is perceived not just as a poetic form, but as a distinct way of experiencing the world: A method of perception. This makes the haiku a unique form of poetry, and one that represents the result of a progressive distillation of historical Japanese poetic forms, the haiku was actually
