About this ebook

Between cross-country practice, playing poker and running a high-stakes gambling operation, and keeping the NCAA committee at arm's length, Jim Money has a full schedule. No problem, Jim is young, smart, ambitious and operates on Red Bull and dedication. He's making money, puts his friends on payroll, and life is great.

Until...

Officer Jack Seal walks into Jim's illicit operation.

Jim Money is BUSTED.

But...

Officer Seal makes no arrests. Instead of calling for backup, he goes in with Bill and Thomas --two hard men who don't share their last names and who aren't on the police force. They decide that its more profitable to play both sides of the law and extort the college kid in exchange for a get out of jail free card.

BUSTED is a prequel to the Jim Money Stories (Bon Appétit, Escape, On the Run, and James) that dates back to Jim Money's college days when he was an up-and-coming distance runner on scholarship at Southern Illinois University. Balancing school and 10-mile runs with running his illegal gambling operation, Jim Money and his friends Frank and Steve must grow up fast, or else his next race will be out of Carbondale, Illinois and possibly to a prison sentence, or the grave.

Will Jim and his friends find a way to keep his gambling operation alive while keeping themselves off the police and the NCAA officials' radar? Let's see what rouge Officer Seal and his cohorts have to say about that.

    Chapter 1

Cards shuffled, pots grew, roulette wheels turned, and dice were tossed. Players cursed at other players, cursed their luck, and some slid bills to chip runners to rebuy into the table games. If one didn’t know any better, he might mistake this establishment for a small casino in one of the southern states, but the less than homely décor brought any gambler back to reality. No art adorned the walls, no fancy rugs or furniture. Everything in the house was barebones. The secondhand furniture, such as the chairs, barstools and well-worn leather couches, adorned the house, but the action is what counted and gamblers came from as far as Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, and Indiana to give this modest bi-level shack their action.

At the backdoor stood two armed guards, Frank and Steve, one with a 9mm handgun in his holster and the other holding a shotgun, mostly to give off the impression that they were some real bad asses. Patrons entered through the same backdoor where the guards were posted. This led to an enclosed back porch where closed blinds cut off any evening daylight that tried to peer through the windows. Instead, the room was lit with an overhead ceiling light. At the entrance, the guards patted down the patrons to ensure that no one entered with any weapons. After the pat down, the gamblers proceeded past the large kitchen area over to the dining room and living room where the wall that once separated the rooms was knocked down to allow for a larger combined open space. This space was occupied by two poker tables, two blackjack tables, one dice table, and one roulette table.

The front door was barricaded to provide the dealers enough time to grab the money and escape from the basement door. The VIP area was upstairs which looked like any other single family home. There were three bedrooms, a family room and a half bathroom. The family room was equipped with a large flat screen television, a PlayStation 3 and a X-Box game console, leather furniture, playing tables and a wet bar; but most VIP clients didn’t go to the VIP section to entertain themselves or play cards. They would come upstairs to fuck the prostitutes who paid Jim for the privilege to discreetly work the makeshift casino floor. The basement served as an off-track betting sports book with 10 long tables which had 20 flat screen television monitors tuned to every horserace and sporting event each gambler desired.

Somewhere in these three areas of the house, Jim Money walked to greet patrons and to make sure that the gamblers were taken care of. He patterned his business after the Horseshoe Casino in Tunica, MS, where he frequented as a weekend rounder, beating the pants off the tourists. Jim loved the level of customer service the Horseshoe provided ranging from comping meals to the chip runners bringing the gamblers’ food to their table so that they wouldn’t have to walk away from the action. He brought that same level of service to his illegal casino. Jim would have liked to have opened his own casino, but gaming licenses were hard to get in Illinois, and the town of Carbondale did not want a casino next to its prestigious Southern Illinois University. Too bad for Carbondale; Jim Money brought a game to the small college town anyway.

Ay Jim, someone wants to see you, Frank shouted.

    Do I know him?

    He says you do.

    I’ll come back there.

Jim walked to the back, but once he got to the kitchen, he checked underneath his sport coat –his glock was still in its holster. He drew the weapon and held it in his right hand before
