About this ebook

Happy Tails Books is proud to be known as the country’s leading publisher of short stories about rescued and adopted animals. The company was founded to raise awareness and funding for rescue organizations, but today our books are so much more: a source of entertainment and valuable information for animal lovers, an outlet for foster and “forever” parents to honor and immortalize their beloved pets, and a fountain of strength for those who have found themselves in the “biz” of rescue for whatever reason (people generally don’t seek out animal advocacy; in most cases it tends to find them, as you’ll see in many of these stories).

We are excited to offer an abbreviated version of our Lost Souls: FOUND! books through this new series, Two-Buck Tails. This special outreach project brings to life the joy, hope, and (occasional) chaos accompanying rescue and adoption in a manner that is affordable and easy to read. Nevertheless, don’t be fooled by the title... These stories are priceless!

If you are new to the concept of rescue, we hope these stories will inspire you to get involved, be it by volunteering, adopting, or donating. If you’re already “in the know,” we hope these tales will reaffirm your devotion to the cause. After all, if we don’t help them, who will?

    Heaping Spoonfuls of Love

A wonderful woman took the day off from work in Sacramento, got up early, and drove down to Bakersfield before my time ran out. If she hadn’t arrived before 4:30 P.M., I would not be writing this.

A few months ago I lived with a family, whom, I thought, loved me. One day I noticed lots of activity and boxes being packed. I ran around with excitement at the prospect of a new home with a larger yard where I could play with my family. Little by little the boxes were loaded up. Finally, the house echoed when I barked. Nothing was left except for me! When I realized I was alone, I barked and barked to alert my family that I was still inside. Then I watched with horror as they got in their truck and left. I lay in front of the door for hours waiting for them to return, the grief and depression was overwhelming.

Days went by, and I ran out of food and water. One day I heard a key in the lock, and I ran to the door hoping my family had returned for me. Instead, I was greeted by strange voices and angry scowls. I sat wagging my tail and hoping someone would feed me or at least give me some water. I pleaded with my eyes, but instead of help, I got tossed outside the chain-link fence! Hey! I barked. That’s my house!

I sat outside this fence waiting, wondering. Why wouldn’t they let me back inside? What happened? What did I do wrong?

Some folks in matching uniforms finally came to pick me up. They had kind but sad eyes when they saw me. They posted me on a website called Dogs In Danger. Can you believe there was a countdown clock with my name on it! A lady in Sacramento posted all kinds of Craigslist ads hoping someone would nab me before I was put to death, and when nobody did, she drove down to get me.

As she exited her little, black, dusty car, she knelt down, and I saw that her eyes were kind and loving. She reached out her hand to let me sniff, and I smelled other loved dogs on them. I cautiously licked her hand. When that hand didn’t smack me, I licked again and inched closer to her. Suddenly, I heard the most beautiful sounds from her lips: laughter and words of encouragement. I almost crawled into her lap! She opened the door and gave me a pretty collar and leash. I jumped right into her back seat and lay down. I let out a huge sigh as we left the property and tried to crawl into her front seat to be her co-pilot. With gentle words she said, No, honey. Stay in the back, so I can get you out of here!

She drove me to a beautiful place near Lodi and brought me to a lovely
