About this ebook

Happy Tails Books is proud to be known as the country’s leading publisher of short stories about rescued and adopted animals. The company was founded to raise awareness and funding for rescue organizations, but today our books are so much more: a source of entertainment and valuable information for animal lovers, an outlet for foster and “forever” parents to honor and immortalize their beloved pets, and a fountain of strength for those who have found themselves in the “biz” of rescue for whatever reason (people generally don’t seek out animal advocacy; in most cases it tends to find them, as you’ll see in many of these stories).

We are excited to offer an abbreviated version of our Lost Souls: FOUND! books through this new series, Two-Buck Tails. This special outreach project brings to life the joy, hope, and (occasional) chaos accompanying rescue and adoption in a manner that is affordable and easy to read. Nevertheless, don’t be fooled by the title... These stories are priceless!

If you are new to the concept of rescue, we hope these stories will inspire you to get involved, be it by volunteering, adopting, or donating. If you’re already “in the know,” we hope these tales will reaffirm your devotion to the cause. After all, if we don’t help them, who will? -Kyla Duffy, Editor-in-Chief

    CIA: Counter Intelligence Animals

I may be harboring top-secret counter-intelligence cats. I'm not 100% sure, but there is something peculiar about these felines. I currently house five cats. Two are permanent pets I adopted, three are fosters, and all were strays.

My original duo, Lunk and Buscemi, are very intelligent. They perform tricks, like high-fives for treats, and seem to understand what I tell them. If they are in the mood, they respond accordingly. It’s totally creepy when I tell Lunk to go get the toy mouse that’s randomly behind the gumball machine in the computer room, and she jogs out of the room only to return with the mouse. Or when I tell her a story about something that happened to me, and she listens intently with her eyes fixed on mine, meowing at all the appropriate times.

It's not uncommon to wake up in the morning to cupboard doors and kitchen drawers hanging wide open. I wouldn't mind it so much if one of them would be considerate enough to start the coffee!

Buscemi is fascinated by cooking. I’ve never seen an animal so intent on watching every step in the food preparation process (except, of course, the dishwashing!). Even more remarkable is that she doesn’t beg, and I don’t feed her people-food. I’m pretty sure she was a chef in another life.

At times I have woken up to loud talking coming from the living room. I suspected my husband had forgotten to shut off the TV when he came to bed. Upon closer inspection, I’ve found a cat lying on the couch watching television with the volume cranked (yes, paw on the remote). I'm cool with them wanting to watch TV, but they need to keep the volume down while I'm sleeping. And no subtitles! One day Lunk put subtitles on, and after months of trying to figure out how to shut it off, I finally called the cable company for help.

Even stranger things have happened since Archie, Petunia, and their mother, appropriately named Momma, came to live with us. Momma was a pregnant stray we took in during the winter months. She had four kittens, and we found two of them permanent homes. We found her a home, too, but she must have liked us better because she escaped from her new house and five months later show up
