Diane J Cornwell

Diane J Cornwell learnt to read before she started school at the age of five. At school she learnt to write the words she already recognized. She loved going to school. When she was asked to write a story on her holiday activities, Diane wrote a story on what she wanted to do, not what she did, and earned an “A” grade for the homework. That started her on a life of writing fiction.A bi-product of all that reading was creating her own stories about determined characters who try to make the right decisions the first time during their adventures. Stories she can read over and over again just for the pleasure of revisiting the characters.Diane wrote her first full length novel in 2007, and hopes to have many more stories created in the coming years.

    DIVIDED LOYALTIES

Whoever said being a private investigator is exciting needs their head read and probably should be locked up in Ward Seven of the closest hospital.

Here I am, Daniel Robins, at six forty-four on Sunday morning, squashed into my antiquated car, watching a house where nothing happened. Nothing much ever happens in Casino, a small country town in northern New South Wales. If you want night life visit Lismore or Byron Bay.

The car was an old Ford Cortina, which did have leg room, but just not enough for my long legs. The car smelled of stale coffee and sweat. At least my body heat kept it slightly above zero degrees Celsius during the night and the blankets helped.

I grew up here, went to school here, then moved to Brisbane to attend university, until I realised I hated crowds, hated know-it-alls, and hated the hurried pace of the city. So, in a moment of madness I moved back to Casino. I had forgotten how backward the locals were or how much they gossiped; which actually helped in my line of work. I forgot how boring the place was. And cold. But I still love it.

I shifted my legs yet again and stared through the dirty windscreen. Blinking only shifted the grit that felt like glass shards around to the corners of my eyes.

One more night wasted watching a house where my client assured me her husband was having an affair. If he was, I couldn’t see it. No one arrived at the house all night, except for the husband. He watched television for two hours or so before he turned off the lights. Obviously he slept, which is more than I did.

A vehicle started up and backed out of the driveway two doors down from my client’s husband. It was a black Ford F100, dusty and noisy. He gunned the motor and it surged down the road, leaving a dust cloud behind, while I pushed blankets, coffee cup, thermos and assorted papers aside looking for my camera. I found my notebook with a pen clipped to the spiral wire, so pulled them towards me. The rest of the pile settled down again, except for the thermos, which fell to the floor with a soft thud. Something saved it from breaking.

I looked at my watch and made a note in my notebook.

6:46 am Sunday July 1 - Black Ford F100, dirty and noisy, left 3 McLoud Lane, male driving.

No female in their right mind would wear a cowboy hat like that one.
