While Josh and Dana were cruising the boutique shops on Wall St., Bend, Oregon’s main drag, Josh suddenly stopped and exclaimed, ‘Holy Christ! Can it be a brother reject from the LA Times?’

The man crossing the sidewalk to get to his car stopped and focused on Josh. After a two-count, he bellowed, ‘Ladies of Bend, hide your daughters. Josh Malley is in town!’

‘Easy there, big fellow, this here’s my woman. Try to show some unaccustomed respect for the fairer species. Dana, this ink stained wretch is Ronnie Willard. We worked together at the Times until they caught onto him.’

‘Howdy, Dana. The Times dumped his raggedy ass, too, as I recall. Pardon my uncouth western ways.’

‘Hi, Ronnie. We both know that Josh was fired for multiple offenses but how about you? Are you still newspapering?’

‘Am, indeed. If you will lift your eyes you will see the second floor offices of the Central Oregon Sportsman, my current employer, unworthy though they be to have a man of my talent aboard. You all moving to town or just passing through?’

Josh was having fun with this. ‘We’ll only stay long enough to blow the whistle on you, you fraud, you poseur. What would a lounge lizard like you know about sports?’

‘Ah, the name. It’s a general news local rag but the locale upon which we report is highly sporty. A bit deceptive, for sure. Now what brings you all to paradise?’

‘We were just tooling up the coast road to get to Seattle when we met some folks that recommended we come over the hill and see Bend.’

‘Did you take MacKenzie Pass and see Sahalie Falls and come through Sisters?’

    ‘Did, in fact.’

‘And you saw the Three Sisters Mountains after which it’s named?’

‘The guy at the ice cream parlor in Sisters told us all about it. Yes, sir, we are all snapped in.’

‘Josh, I gotta run but is there any chance for a dinner with you all tonight? Do you remember my wife, Kay?’

‘Sure do but I’m amazed that you could hold onto her. She’s classy and smart and could do better.’ With that, Dana took a swing at Josh which he neatly sidestepped.

‘So true. Where are you staying?’

‘We just checked into River House.’

‘They have a nice restaurant. How about we meet for a Dutch treat dinner there, say, 7 o’clock?’

Josh looked at Dana who gave an enthusiastic couple of nods. ‘We’re on. See you there.’

Bend, as it turns out, is a beautiful town; sophisticated, cultural and athletic. It has a split personality with the west side of town woodsy and hilly and the east side of town flat and somewhat barren as the high desert begins and stretches all the way to Idaho. Originally called ‘Farewell Bend’ since it was the last lush spot for those heading east for a long arid stretch, the town has had its boom and bust cycles but has consistently attracted new residents. Many come to take a short, one-time vacation and end up coming back to retire. The young people who come and decide they want to live the active outdoor lifestyle find that employment opportunities are thin…but, they stay anyhow. It is not at all unusual to find people with advanced degrees waiting tables and tending shops.

Nonetheless, the attractions are numerous. There is a close by world class ski mountain, biking trails everywhere, hiking, running and all varieties thereof. The local employers close their shops and factories on the first day
