    Why Teach Abroad?

Deciding to teach English abroad is pretty easy. If you aren’t sure what you want out of life or if you are not quite ready to settle down into a job or graduate school, then travelling is a common alternative. There are plenty of volunteer programmes or backpacking tours, and many of these provide great experiences for those who can raise the cash to pay for them. For those people who don’t have the money or who want to earn as they travel, teaching English abroad is a great option. The decision isn’t that hard, but once you’ve made the decision, there are a lot of things which come with it you haven’t even thought about or are unsure about. This is a basic guide to what it is like living and teaching abroad and how best to approach it - all written by an experienced English teacher.

First of all, what is teaching English abroad all about? Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is also known as EFL (English as a Foreign Language), ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). I’ll go into all these things in more depth later on in the guide, so don’t worry if it’s not mentioned right now. To kick off our exploration of teaching abroad, here are a few FAQs and their answers:

Q: Do I have to have a teaching degree to be a TEFL teacher?

A: No. Most language schools require you to have a Bachelor’s degree and a TEFL Certificate, but it doesn’t matter what subject you studied at University. I knew people who studied Philosophy, Art History, Sports and Exercise Science… it really doesn’t matter as long as you have a degree. In some spots, even that is negotiable, although it’ll open more doors for you wherever you go. The TEFL Certificate, well, we’ll get to that later.

Q: Do I need to speak the language of the country I am going to teach in?

A: No. Most language schools prefer that you don’t speak the language because TEFL is based on immersion in the English language. If you don’t know any
