I was born in 1974 in Bremerton, Washington. I moved to Bellingham, Washington at the age of four and have been here ever since. I love living in the Pacific Northwest about two months out of the year. The other ten months it rains. Constant rain gives me plenty of time to read and write. While I'm hooked on writing horror right now, I enjoy many other genres. My favorite author is Robin Hobb, who also lives in the northwest. She is the award winning Fantasy author of Assassin's Apprentice and several sequels. I have one son. I named him Chance. He is currently six going on fifteen. We are both currently enrolled in school, but I am a few grades ahead of him.

How to Win Friends and Influence People

    After the Zombie Apocalypse

First, if you’re reading this, congratulations are in order. You have managed to be one of the lucky few to survive the rising of the dead. Nearly everyone died in those first few days. Those of us that managed to make it through the first week are truly special, so give yourself a pat on the back.

Many of the survivors I have encountered have a very grim outlook on life today, but take a moment to think back to the way things were before this all happened. Was life that great? Gone are the days of rampant consumerism, credit card debt, and broken economies. That one percent who once held half of the country’s wealth, those moguls and blue bloods who were vilified by protestors are no more. The Occupy Wall Street movement asked for change and that is exactly what we got.

We no longer measure wealth with little green strips of paper or computer printouts. Now we measure wealth with canned food and bottled water. Americans have gone from trading mortgage backed securities to trading weapons and ammunition. Credit scores are a thing of the past because there is not a soul left on the planet willing to take an IOU.

The mortgage crisis is over. Live where you want. Fortify your new home how ever you like. Go find yourself a gas hogging SUV and run it until the wheels fall off. What difference is it going to make? There aren’t enough humans left on the entire planet to produce a noteworthy amount of greenhouse gas emissions.

Some say zombies ended the world. I say the zombies saved it. Our lives are simple now, our concerns are simple. We’re back to the basics: food, water, and shelter. But even in this bold new world of ours, there are ways to make your life easier. Whether you’re a roving nomad never stopping in one place for too long or a settler determined to live life in a survivor community, developing people skills can be beneficial to everyone.

In this little pamphlet, you will find everything you need to affect those around you in a positive way and enrich the lives of everyone you encounter. Building trust and mutually beneficial relationships is more important now than ever before, so read on and learn how.

    CHAPTER ONE

If I had known that December 24, 2011 was going to be my last normal day on Earth, I might have skipped work and watched all the shows that had built up on my DVR. Oh how I miss television, sitting idly staring at a colorful display of moving pictures, getting so wrapped up in the fictional lives of the characters portrayed that I failed to create a life of my own. I sometimes wonder if any of my favorite actors survived the zombie apocalypse. I mean statistically speaking, about one in five hundred should have survived. At least that’s my best guess, based on the number of survivors I’ve encountered so far. That statistic may be skewed in the more densely populated areas like Manhattan and Hollywood.

Would any of my favorite TV stars have an advantage over the others when it came to survival? Hugh Laurie by all accounts was a fairly intelligent individual, maybe not at the level of his alter ego Dr. House from the hit medical drama on Fox, but surely he was smart enough to keep his head in this strange new world of ours.

I’m not sure any of the characters from Sons of Anarchy would have an edge over other actors; playing a badass on television doesn’t necessarily translate to real world bad assedness. Although, if a nerdy sci/fi freak like me survived, there is no telling who else might have. I bet there are a high percentage of rap stars still alive and kicking. If twelve bullets didn’t stop Fifty-Cent I doubt a horde of the walking dead are going to have any luck; plus those guys always walked around with entourages armed to the teeth.

On that fateful morning, I got up at the crack of nine o’clock and had to skip my morning shower. The mall opened at ten and although it was my last day of work, I needed a good reference from my boss so I could look for another job after the New Year’s Day. In an economy where the old farts that lost their retirement in the stock market crash were reentering the workforce in droves and every corporation was timidly awaiting a sure sign that things were truly on the mend, finding a decent paying job had become impossible.

I donned my pointed green cap and stared at my reflection in the full length mirror on the back of my closet door. I had never really liked what I saw there, but dressed in my elf outfit I felt like more dweebish than ever. Adult sized, it was the only costume available for the Santa’s helper position. Although my twenty-third birthday had come and gone, I doubt many would have called me adult sized. Five feet eight inches is not extremely short by anyone’s standards, but if I bounced on my bathroom scale, I still couldn’t get it to read more than a hundred and fifty pounds. The elf costume hung loosely on my small frame and somehow accentuated my birdlike chest. I should have added pectoral muscles to my Christmas list.

I turned to my vintage autographed William Shatner poster hanging over my dresser. Well, Captain, a man’s got to pay the bills, I said flashing him the split fingered ‘live long and prosper’ salute. In Gene Roddenberry’s universe, I would have made a decent Vulcan. I decided to keep the plastic elf ears when I turned in the costume. They would go great with my authentic Starfleet uniform.

    Genie!

That was Blake, one of my roommates. Blake Powers was the most driven guy I had ever met. He was the whole package: dashing good looks, boyish charm, and an annoyingly optimistic outlook concerning everything. He was the king of finding the silver lining.

I’m up! I yelled through my bedroom door.

Blake was also the time keeper. He had everyone’s schedule memorized, which was a feat in itself. Five guys working and attending college was a lot to keep track of.

Genie, you’re going to be late, buddy, Blake said, poking his head into my room.

    Blake called everyone buddy.

I slipped into my pointed shoes, I’m ready. I was just about to head out.

Alright, don’t forget to bring a change of clothes; you’re going to ask that girl out today…Cameron was it?

    Carmen, I corrected.

That’s right… you got the money for the gift saved up and you’re going to make your move, right, champ? Blake asked, flashing his winning smile.

    Blake called everyone champ.

Yeah, I got the money. I’m just kinda nervous, I said with a shrug.

"Hey, buddy, there’s nothing to be nervous about. You just do like I told you and be honest with her. Women love it when men know what they want. Exude confidence and she will be putty in your hands. Make sure you’re clear that you want a date. If you try to play it cool and use terms like ‘hang out’ or ‘meet up’ you’re going to end up in the friend zone. Once you get there it’s almost
