    FIRING POINT

Jack held the Lee Enfield No.4 rifle steady as his spotter whispered the range and wind direction to him. They had been tasked with taking out a high ranking Nazi officer who had an estate in the hinterland of Poland.

The French army had just pulled out of Poland and Hitler was trying to sue for peace with the British. It didn't really matter to them. Jack and Sam were regular soldiers in the Queen's army and they did what they were told when they were told.

He examined the target carefully. He was six foot nearly, tall for a German, and had brown mousey hair. Jack guessed he would have brown or blue eyes by his complexion. Not bad for a spy really.

This man was one of Britain's better agents, but word on the street was that he had been found out and would be picked up soon by the German high command. The problem was that he knew that and was bargaining with the Germans rather than taking the risk of being caught during an extraction.

This meant that Jack and Sam were on a time limit. At any time the deal could go through when the man in his scope decided to agree. He pulled the trigger.

No round entered the cylinder today. They were just checking out the location for later when they would sneak within range and perform the kill.

Sam looked at Jack. They both knew that today would be a difficult one. They would have to shoot outside of the range of the sentries and patrols that regularly rounded the estate.

They snuck back into the small dug out they had created under a large bush. They were wearing their camouflage gear and would have looked like two small bushes moving in the wind if anyone had noticed them moving.

Jack went in first and set down his rifle. Sam was in next and put his smaller semi-automatic next to Jack's weapon.

Are you sure this is a good idea? Sam whispered in his southern British accent.

Not particularly, Sammy, but the brass needs this man dead. He knows too much.

Sam was from the south and Jack the north. Normally people from those two areas didn't get along so well. Sam was married to Jack's sister
