    Winter Whispers

Mrs. Fine grasped the table in a white-knuckled grip. Sylvia, you can't go there. It will snow.

Sylvia gaped. She thought she had prepared responses for every conceivable objection from her mother, but she had not anticipated that particular argument. It will snow?

Mrs. Fine took deep breaths until only a trace of panic tinged her eyes. Yes, dear. It will snow. Pick a college here. California has so many good colleges. Why go all the way across the country? It's not like Chula Vista is at the end of the earth or something. She rummaged through the envelopes on the kitchen table, scattering them until she found what she was looking for. Here! These two are both so close; you could even live at home and commute! Wouldn't that be wonderful? What do you like better--the University of San Diego or ITT Tech in San Diego. ITT is cheaper, but--

No. Sylvia's chest tightened in a familiar, suffocating sensation. She clenched her jaw, trying to ignore the havoc her mother had wreaked amongst the envelopes. Focus on the issue. Those don't have the focus that I want in a math program, and--

Math program? Who said you would be studying math? Absolutely not. Just because your father was a mathematician from a long line of mathematicians does not mean you have to be. She grabbed Sylvia's face, forcing eye contact. "Please, do not be like him."

The desperation in her mother's eyes confused Sylvia. It was out of synch with the context of the conversation. She pushed the argument back to familiar territory. SUNY at Buffalo is a good university, and I really want to go. They have a good math program and are offering a great scholarship deal. She didn't mention that the distance between it and her mother was one of its most appealing features.

Her mother spoke in a patronizing tone, as if reprimanding a child. We've already ruled that out. Pay attention, Sylvia.

Ruled out? On the grounds that it will snow? Do you realize how ludicrous that sounds? Sylvia felt the pitch of her voice rising, and tried to regain a reasonable tone. "Don't worry; I'll bring a coat.
