    Lights in the Sky

    Chapter 1

Shortly after sunset, when the steep forested hills of Bridger Woods were shrouded in darkness and the first stars were out for the night, something remarkable happened in the sky south of town towards Devils Lake. It occurred so fast that no one in Far Hollow paid attention.

    Well, almost no one.

An overly round basset hound was just let out in the backyard to do what dogs mustn’t do in the house. It didn’t notice the chill left over from winter’s season of unusual cold. In another month spring would arrive. But what did the hound care? There were more important things to think about. Nosing around for the perfect spot, the canine looked up at the array of twinkling marvels in the dark sky and didn’t give them another thought.

Dogs are simple like that. Something as complex as galaxies and planets, solar winds, comets and boiling stars offer nothing of value compared to tasty doggie-bones, more doggie-bones and rubbery, squeaky chew-toys that are insanely fun to tear apart, or better yet, a good nap after more doggie-bones.

Had the basset hound any interest other than the business at hand, it would have seen what appeared to be a vast expanse of sparkly lights, and it was. Only, seven of those spots of light suddenly moved like no star would ever move. Like a game of hide-and-seek, they suddenly streaked across the darkness in a blur and came to an abrupt halt, blending with the sky again as if they had never moved.

It happened twice more before the hound finished and again while sniffing at everything possible on the way back to the porch. When the hound scratched on the backdoor with an impatient whimper someone was there to open the door with a word of praise. Just as the door shut the lights in the sky blinked once, turned crimson and were gone.

Down the street from where a happy basset hound begged for another doggie-bone to help its rotund appearance, two youngsters were sitting out back on the porch watching the starry night sky. Clad in warm jackets against the chill, the youngest of the pair cradled a worn Garfield the Cat plush doll in her lap. Frank, as she called him (because she had a hard time pronouncing Garfield), was always with her.

Next to her was her brother Jason. He was a full twelve-years old and her hero. She loved spending time with him. But sometimes he was boring. Right then he was boring. Mimicking his movements, she stared at the sky, and stared and stared, but just couldn’t understand what he was looking at. Or why. She really wasn’t that much interested, yet, she adored him almost as much as her mom and dad. Anything he was going to do, she’d do it too. Right then, he was looking at stars.

    It was still boring.

Are we done, Jason? she asked her brother and looked down at Frank with a slight pout. She was a drama-queen of sorts. Not that she was spoiled, but rather at that age where she just figured out that there were others just as
