The Strange Goings-On at White Rock Lake
()
About this ebook
Some spirits just cannot believe that they are dead. For decades there have been paranormal sightings of the mysterious and alluring ‘Lady of the Lake’, who was killed after a car crash caused her to drown in White Rock Lake almost a century ago. Separate appearances occur to both Gash and Jenna, as well as to the Glynn family’s driver, Joey. Although they keep it secret from each other, these events almost derail two charitable concerts on the same night.
The promising reality star, Jenna Glynn, is contemplating the next ghost-hunting episode of her spec TV series, Celebrities Haunt Dallas. She is feeling both grateful and guilty about hijacking the paranormal skills of her reluctant sidekick, the once-famous rocker Gash Peavy, for the first two episodes at City Tavern and at the grand Adolphus Hotel. To display her gratitude, Jenna resolves to produce a comeback concert for Gash at the Corinthian Sailing Club of White Rock Lake.
Jenna aims to stifle any ghost talk, for fear that it will send Gash packing. He feels that her elegant ‘society event’ setting for his CD-release concert is ostentatious and misguided. Gash decides to covertly organize his own free concert at nearby Flag Pole Hill later that same night. He recruits Glynn family staff members, Joey the limo driver and Yoshio the groundskeeper, as well as his psychiatrist Dr. Angus Glynn, to help with his surreptitious plan. Gash hopes to draw a large audience of substance-abusers and addicts, and then personally challenge them to pledge sobriety and to accept help from the various rehab services.
Lies are told, promises are broken, and the pair both vow to keep their encounters with the ‘Lady of the Lake’ forever secret from each other. The result is a spooky comedy of errors, which further escalates the awkward and unrequited relationship that the two had endured in The Ghost of City Tavern and The Spirit of the Old Hotel. This unwelcome phantom, and their own devious intrigue, plunge the recalcitrant partners into deeper antipathy.

Preface
My great grand-mother, Miss Ethyl, lived close to White Rock Lake. She told me about spooks and spirits that roamed the shores. She warned me to stay away from lakes, rivers, and the seas because the devil controlled the waters. She warned me against rock and roll and against New York City. She was right about them all.
Many sightings of the hapless Lady of the Lake have been reported all over the lake shore, the length of Lawther Drive, and even the surrounding neighborhoods by parked lovers enjoying the moonlight as well police officers responding to calls. There is no doubt about the ghostly young lady killed in a car-crash that caused her to drown in the lake, though it happened almost a century before. Some spirits just cannot believe they are dead.

Chapter One
I told you, I’m not ready yet,
Gash Peavy, former rock idol and rehabilitated junkie, spoke emphatically to Jenna Glynn, ghost-hunter and bane of his existence.
By the time I get this event nailed down, you will be ready,
argued Jenna, holding one finger in the air to indicate her cell phone party was back on the line and another finger that pressed her blue-tooth to her ear.
Yes, this is she,
intoned Jenna in that bitch-on-wheels voice he couldn’t stand.
Jenna, hang up the phone,
ordered Gash.
Jenna responded by getting up from the lounge chair, adjusting her prescription sunglasses, and taking her business call to the other side of the pool.
The two were basking in the summer sun beside the pool and spa behind the Glynn’s contemporary Highland Park home, a community unto itself in the heart of Dallas, Texas. Jenna felt she owed Clarence Gash
Peavy a great debt of gratitude for his hapless participation in two violent hauntings for her Biography Channel series, now called Celebrities Haunt Dallas.
She had decided that throwing him a high profile CD release concert to launch his music career come-back was the best idea ever. He was still fairly fresh from rehab, also courtesy of Jenna and her father, psychiatrist Dr. Angus Glynn, and Gash thought the indebtedness was piling up.
Shit,
was all he could think of to say.
Excuse me?
Jenna’s mother, socialite Bunny Glynn, tossed back playfully at Gash while bringing a tray of refreshments from the house.
I thought you might want a grapefruit spritz— without the vodka. Jenna still on the phone?
Bunny inquired as she placed the drinks on the heavily lacquered bamboo side table and sat in a nearby deck chair.
She is like some kind of bulldozer when she gets an idea in her head. Where does she get that stuff?
Gash blurted out in frustration.
Bunny shifted in her chair uncomfortably. The rocker realized how insulting his remark might have been.
No offense, Bunny,
he mumbled.
Actually, you are right about that. She learned that assertive behavior from me. She was practically my little secretary for all the events I planned throughout the years.
Bunny looked at Peavy’s forlorn expression and smiled, I am sorry that behavior is now wearing on you. Is there any way I can help?
Bunny and her tenant/guest listened as Jenna concluded a triumphant phone call from across the pool. Gash looked desperately at Bunny.
Not unless you can stop a freight train,
he whined.
Bunny chuckled sympathetically, knowing there was nothing she could do to discourage Jenna from her mission, whatever mission that may be. Then she looked at Gash’s face, not so much at his dark good looks but at his countenance. She assessed his strength and resolve. She measured his desire to heal as well as to move forward with his art and craft. Then she spoke to him warmly.
Clarence,
she began, What is your long-term goal?
To gain control of my life and career,
he said almost like a chant from group therapy.
What is your goal this year toward that end?
To release a CD of new music,
he answered definitively.
What is your intention this week to move forward with that?
I see what you’re doing: Reminding me of my rehab commitments. Look, I know I am living here at your family’s good graces, and I intend to be self-supporting—
"You already are. Clarence, don’t take this show of concern down the wrong path. I simply mean that we have dropped into each others’ lives for a reason, and we all have skills that can help one another reach goals. Since you can’t
