About this ebook

When Natalie accompanies her older sister on summer mornings to Ocean Beach in San Francisco, she has an opportunity to explore. Combining the fun of finding a message in a bottle and texting by cell phone, Natalie meets a Vietnamese boy called Duck. The two children from different cultures share an adventure and in the process create a pleasant surprise for their families.

While technology is often blamed for isolating people, in this case technology, in the form of text-messaging, brings together two children from very different backgrounds, allowing them to discover shared values of compassion and responsibility. A text-messaging glossary is included at the back.

I am a published Prentice-Hall author and was inspired to tell the story of Natalie and Duck by my four beautiful granddaughters. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and love to visit Ocean Beach.

    I M Natalie Who R U?

Every story has to begin somewhere, and this story begins with a bird feeder outside the upstairs bedroom window of an eleven-year-old girl named Natalie.

Natalie is sitting, hands under chin, her bird book in her lap, looking at the feeder attached to the windowsill.

I wonder where these finches go at night. Do they sit together on a branch in our pine tree? What if it rains? Do they put their heads under their wings like the ducks in Golden Gate Park? Do the fire trucks wake them up like they wake me sometimes?

Suddenly Natalie turns away from the window and yells, No, Mom. I won’t do it! Soccer camp is bad enough. Having Ashley babysit me two whole days a week, I’ll die. I’ll totally die. It’s not fair.

Natalie’s parents are standing together at the bottom of the stairs. Her mother replies, Natalie, we’ve been through this a hundred times. You’re being very difficult.

At the feeder a big blue Stellar’s jay arrives, scattering the two small raspberry-headed finches and throwing seed everywhere as he looks for the sunflower seeds he likes.

Natalie thinks, That’s it, Mr. Stellar’s jay. Throw those seeds.

She goes to her bedroom door and throws a stuffed bear down the stairs towards her mother’s voice.

At the bottom of the stairs, her mother says, Your turn to talk to your daughter, Matt.

Natalie’s father calls, Natalie, it’s only for a few weeks, Tuesdays and Thursdays, while your mother finishes this project. Then we’ll all go on a great summer vacation together.

I hate Mom’s projects, says Natalie. I liked it better before she started working. And Ashley and her stupid boyfriend Kenny make me sick. Natalie mimics her sister, Oh, Kenneth.

"Your sister won’t make you sick, Natalie, and this is an important project for your mother’s career. We’ve talked
