About this ebook
When Hank’s wife of fifty years suddenly passes away, he can’t imagine life will ever be the same. Drifting in a fog of loneliness, he finds comfort only in the company of his three golfing buddies and their weekly visits to the local diner. Until...
Annie Wilson shows up in the form of the diner’s newest waitress. Smart, funny, and close to Hank’s own age, she shares his feelings of grief, having lost her own spouse years before. As their attraction grows–and their friends engage in a little matchmaking–Hank wonders: should he take a second chance on love?
A Heart Opens is an inspirational novella that explores letting go of grief to embrace a brand new chance at love and happiness.

Chapter One
The usual night sounds of the house, the occasional squeaks and groans as the temperature changed and the house moved, or the ice maker dumped another load of ice into the bin, seemed magnified as Hank lay awake, unable to sleep and escape the sense of hopeless grief that enveloped him. The loss of his companion of 50 years seemed unbearable. He had not spent more than a few dozen nights without his wife Mable by his side, knowing that he could reach out and touch her at any time.
What would he do? How could he get through another day without her? Unanswered questions flowed through his troubled mind as he thought about the past few days.
The events seemed disconnected from reality. The sudden massive heart attack with no warning, the funeral arrangements, decisions he never thought about having to make alone.
Sympathetic friends, the somber faces of the children and grandchildren, the feeling of being crushed by the crowds, and the seemingly endless line of well wishers. The crowd of people at the house and then the sudden quiet hopelessness as one by one they left and he was alone in the dark bedroom with only the memories of his one true love.
He drifted for several days in a fog of despair, his heart like a heavy weight in his chest, as he wandered from room to room, an occasional tear escaping from the corner of his eye as he looked at a picture or a memento of times past.
Where do I start? He wondered. What do I do? All the plans they had made had included her, and now she was gone. Pastor Jim stopped by most days for a few minutes to make sure he was OK and a few friends called to check on him but the conversations were awkward
