I received a free copy of "His Calling" from Goodreads First Reads. I very much enjoyed the plot and characters. At times the dialog seemed somewhat forced and unnatural, and it took away from the story a little bit. But overall I really liked the book and look forward to reading more about the girls.

What a debut! Jason J. Cross really knows how to write a captivating story with a powerful spiritual aspect and message. At first, when I sat down to read this, I was a little iffy -even though I told the author I would be happy to review it for him- because it was a bit of a different styled writing. But, the more I read, the more I realized that this author has skills! I kept on reading and kept on feeling that message flow right through me. While there is humor in this book, Cross weaves a mysterious element into the mix. It keeps the reader guessing on what will happen next, and when you think you have it figured all out, you go to the next page, and you get a surprise each time. Each of the characters that receive "His Calling" are perfect for the roles they play in the story. They are deep and meaningful and filled with a desire that only He can provide. These characters are called on to help the same man, a man who needs to learn that he can count on one and one alone....God. That God is ALWAYS there, even if it doesn't feel like. I highly recommend this interesting and entertaining read. It's worthy of 5 stars for a debut novel, and I am going to definitely be checking out the sequel to this novel, His Calling: Inner Battles. If it's like this first one, then it will be as worthy of 5 stars! Oh, and Cross is working on turning His Calling into a animated movie...DEFINITELY going to check that out as this book has the potential to be a fantastic movie!

Chapter 1 Meet The Angels

Elizabeth

The sun peaked over the horizon sending warm light into Elizabeth’s room. She is known as the girl that is always smiling and the light revealed she does so in her sleep as well. Dreaming an unknown dream, she laid in her brightly painted room that she shares only with her favorite plants. They sit there and watch as she peaceful sleeps.

The clock changes its face to seven thirty am and simultaneously plays a soft song. To some people, this soft music would not be enough to wake them from their dreams but these people usually are the ones that curse the morning light that promises another day at work.

Not Elizabeth, though. She woke up instantly, brushed her red hair from her face and stretched, welcoming another day. Good morning, she said after the first stretch of the day came to an end, and thank you so much for giving me another day. Praise you Jesus.

She got out of bed and immediately went straight to her knees and prayed. Thank you, Lord, for being so good to me. I pray that today I am productive in all things that are good for you and your Kingdom. I pray that my every action today blesses and praises you in the highest. I also pray that maybe today is the day that I finally meet the man of my dreams. If not then I will patiently wait for the day that you introduce us. It is all about you and has nothing to do with me. May your will be done. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Elizabeth got out of her bed and walked over to the window. Looking at the outside world – which most would agree really wasn’t much to look at – she smiled and said, Oh and what a beautiful day you have given me. I thank you so much for all the gifts you have given me. Past, present and everything you have planned for me in the future.

She walked into the bathroom, humming a song that she could not recall the words to at the moment. After putting the toothpaste on her brush she looked at herself in the mirror. Well good morning to you, Elizabeth, and how are you today? I am just fine thank you for asking. She laughed to herself and proceeded to brush her teeth.

Good morning Fred, she said as she starts to water her plants. Did you sleep well? And how about you Sandy? You look absolutely wonderful this morning. Isn’t God amazing?

She smiled and nodded to herself. Standing up, she grabbed her bag and headed out the door.

*************************

Elizabeth sat at her desk, reading something off of her computer screen. Miss Haley, a voice called out from an office, can you come in here for a second?

Right away, Mr. Jones, Elizabeth called out as she finished off her last, sentence. Cheerfully, she stood up, grabbed her pad, and walked into Mr. Jones office. I am almost finished with my story on the Sunset Muggings . . .

Can you close the door please, Mr. Jones said without looking away from his computer. Elizabeth closed the door and sat on the other side of his desk; pen and pad ready to start taking notes if he had any to give her. It’s always good to be prepared.

Mr. Jones continued to work on his computer without looking up at all. Elizabeth sat there patiently and started to look around his office. He had many trophies and awards throughout his office. An Award for best news article, an award for community service, an award for just about everything. In a lone corner, right behind Mr. Jones was a small picture of Mr. Jones and his family.

Miss Haley, Mr. Jones said quickly, startling Elizabeth for a second, how are you doing today?

Oh, I am doing just fine, thank you for asking.

I mean financially, Mr. Jones said, ignoring her happy tone.

I am doing okay, Elizabeth said without even thinking about. The Lord provides for what I need.

Yes, Mr. Jones said, uninterested. I guess what I am getting at is that I am a little concerned for you. You come here every day so . . . uh . . . happy.

Why would that be a bad thing?

Oh, it is not, Mr. Jones fumbled. It’s just that . . . forgive me, I really don’t know how else to say it . . .

It is usually best if you just say it.

Okay, I will then. Miss Haley, I am a Reporter and a damn good one at that. Elizabeth is about to say something but he doesn’t let her. I always get the good stories because I am so good at seeing through people. You see, everyone wears a mask but it takes a special talent to see through the mask. A talent which I just happen to have. Now, I see you come in here everyday, always so happy and always thanking God for every little thing and you may have gotten the rest of the office fooled but you cannot get past me so easily.

Get past you? Elizabeth asked, confused.

Let me tell you what I see, Mr. Jones said, confidently, as he put his arms behind his head and put on a very smug look. I see a young women who puts on a front. A young girl who is in so much pain because she is so lonely. You are a little girl in a big city and you really can’t handle it. You need a big strong man to take care of you. Am I right?

No, Elizabeth said without even thinking about it.

No? Mr. Jones responded full of doubt. I really think I am. Do you have a boyfriend?

No . . .

Mr. Jones leaned forward with as much excitement as a man who just won the greatest of feats. He continued sounding very concerned, Miss Haley, everybody needs somebody.

Oh I do have someone.

But . . .

You didn’t let me finish. I have The Lord in my life and that is all I really need. Don’t get me wrong, I would love for the good Lord to put someone into my life to share, but if he doesn’t then I am quite happy with just us two.

Mr. Jones had a mixture of confusion and frustration on his face. Just you two?

That’s right.

Oh don’t be stupid now, Mr. Jones said clearly upset.

Oh Mr. Jones, Elizabeth said waving her hand at him. Don’t get all bent out of shape because I don’t want to sleep with you.

Mr. Jones got all flustered as he said, What? I don’t know what you are talking . . .

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. You are the one that wears a mask. You surround yourself with all these awards just so people can come in here and think you are something that you so desperately want to be.

And what do I want to be? Mr. Jones asked, folding his arms across his chest.

Special, Elizabeth said as plainly as if she was talking about the weather. You want everyone to think highly of you and your accomplishments. You want to sleep with all the pretty women so you can continue to collect awards – even if those are only in your memories – but you fail to see something very important. There is only one thing in this office that has a frame around it that makes you special.

And what is that?

The one that you pay the least attention too. The one that deserves the best and biggest frame. Elizabeth points to the picture of his family.

Mr. Jones looked over at the picture for a few seconds then quickly looked back at Elizabeth. Oh I see your game. You come in here pretending like you are better than everyone when you are just like the rest of them.

I never said I didn’t have flaws.

Of course you do. You sit here so smug waiting for the perfect opportunity to set me up so you can blackmail me.

I have no interest in taking your money, The Lord watches . . .

Over you? Mr. Jones said with complete disgust. Well let’s see if he watches over you now. You’re fired.

Elizabeth went into complete shock. I’m . . .

That’s right, you’re fired. I don’t need any whores on my staff trying to ruin my family life. Mr. Jones reached over and picked up the phone.

But . . .

Let’s see how well your Lord watches over you after I am done. You will never work in this town again. He turned his attention to the person on the phone. "Hello, security. I need you to come up to the eleventh floor and escort an ex-employee out of my office. Hold on. Turning his attention back to Elizabeth, he smiled as if his victory was well earned. Get your stuff together quickly and get out. Enjoy your Lord watching over you."

She quickly got up and ran out of his office. She could hear him laughing. She fought back her tears as she grabbed her bag from underneath her desk.

She started to worry. How was she going to make rent, how was she going to get a job, what is going to happen to her life long dream about becoming a top reporter. All she has worked for was about to be flushed down the drain all because of one man. She felt her tears come when she noticed a sticky on her monitor.

She carefully read it.

"No tears and no worries. Your Lord Your God is here to watch over you. Come to 244A 99th Street in Bay Ridge Brooklyn tonight at Mid-Night. God."

She felt warmth fill her heart and all her worries and concerns faded away. She smiled warmly and started to grab what little she had when security came up to escort her out.

Anna

In an empty room, Anna slept on two chairs that were put together as a makeshift couch. Though it looked completely uncomfortable, she slept without a single movement. A sweatshirt acted as her pillow and a long coat pretended to be her blanket. Though these were not the intentions of the makers of these objects, they acted very well for Anna’s needs.

The sterile feeling room was completely quite. Not even a peep from the air conditioner to indicate that there was any sound in the room at all. With the exception of some additional chairs and a table holding a coffee maker, the room was totally void of any human touch.

High above the room on a wall directly behind Anna, a clock silently ticked the seconds away. It showed no signs of disturbing the lone blonde haired girl in the room, it just passed the time. The second hand ran around in a circle, pushing the minute hand every time it passed the number twelve.

The clock told no tales, waiting for the proper time. When it reached seven thirty, it watched as the silence was broken. Loud sirens screeched in the room and Anna sat up without delay. As if she was never sleeping at all, she threw the coat off and ran toward the door. She was dressed in her scrubs and wore a Stethoscope as a necklace.

Thank you Lord, she called out quickly as she swung open the door and ran into the hallway, for giving me another day. I ask that you bless me with the wisdom to use the skills you’ve given me to help who ever is in need of me at this moment.

The hallway of the hospital was filled with people running around. Coming out of her sleepy state of mind, Anna rushed to find out what was going on. Jackie, she called out to one of the other nurses.

Jackie turned around when hearing her name, and didn’t wait to hear what Anna was about to ask. Hurry up, Anna, we’ve got another drug shoot out, they are bringing in eight people. Jackie turned away from Anna and continued to her original destination.

Anna knew why there was such urgency in Jackie’s voice. After recent budget cuts there were not many doctors on staff. With eight gun shot victims coming in, there were not enough doctors, rooms, staff or equipment to take on that many patients at once.

Anna got her gear together and entered the room that was calling for her attention. The room they were using wasn’t meant to be used for this type of emergency but their options were limited. Jackie was already there, along with two ED Techs. Normally there should be nothing but nurses and doctor’s in the room but the hospital was seriously under staffed. They gladly took all the help they could get.

Their hospital was
