About this ebook

Short history of a French Huguenot pastor whose family was persecuted by Catholic King Louis XIV. His story reveals a depth of principle-centred living that challenges us profoundly. This preacher often had to work to sustain his ministry, suffered great indignities, experienced great honour, knew God personally and deeply, and served Him well. He and his wife were buried in Dublin, Ireland.

JAQUES DE LA FONTAINE - HUGUENOT PASTOR OF PRINCIPLE

An evaluation of the life and ministry for Rev Jaques de la Fontaine, Reformed Pastor

    by

    J. E. Hazlett Lynch

(This is the substance of a paper delivered by the author at the Amyraldian Association conference held at Attleborough, Norfolk in Spring 2007.)

On the beach, I delivered a prayer suitable to our situation. … you will see that divine grace was upon me. It was a prayer that I offered up as much with my heart as with my mouth.

This paper on Jaques de la Fontaine will set out very briefly the historical circumstances of his life, the mighty challenges that he and his family confronted, his responses to these challenges, and a reference to his underlying theological convictions that carried him through triumphantly over many years.

This paper deals with one aspect of the crisis that is facing the Church today, namely, the lack of principle that is so evident within many churches. I don’t want this lecture to be too deep or taxing, but rather more like a sermon that will send you out motivated and inspired by the life of this dear servant of Christ. I will attempt to make application of some of the principles found in Fontaine’s life to our church situation today, so that you will leave this conference ‘fired up’ to be the best that you can be for the Saviour.

The memoirs were very challenging to read, for two main reasons: first, Fontaine’s life stands as a constant reminder of what true spiritually involves. Being spiritually minded when things are going well is one thing; but maintaining that same spiritual attitude when things go contrary is quite another. This Fontaine, by God’s grace, was able to do.

Second, whether it was Fontaine or the editor of his memoirs who is responsible, the narrative jumps about a bit, so that it is difficult at times to keep the thread of the story. However, reading his memoirs was a real challenge and a tremendous encouragement at a time of personal challenge. I tried to get each part into proper context, so that the paper could be presented with some degree of coherence. To what extent I have succeeded, I will leave you to judge.

We will see demonstrated in this ‘ordinary’ yet ‘special’ life, the grace of Almighty God, and how that grace sustained him and his family in situations that included the threat of attack, and actual attacks, on their lives.

    A NOBLE ANCESTRY

Jaques de la Fontaine was born on 7th April 1658, son of the manse, to Rev Jaques Fontaine and Marie Chaillou. His great grandfather, and his father before him, embraced the
