Chapter 1: LEARNING TO READ THE TAROT

When I began learning about the tarot, I found that each card seemed like a huge puzzle. I purchased several books on the tarot generally and others that came with specific decks. There was something to learn in every one of the books, including the little books that always come with any deck that you purchase. As I worked with different decks, I found that I seemed to go back to the Waite/Ryder deck. There was an interesting set of symbols in each card – yet there was a greater ease of understanding their individual meanings. I have continued to find that the Waite/Ryder deck is the best one for beginners; it is also an excellent teaching deck because of the simplicity of the pictures of the symbols on each card.

Once you have learned to work with the Waite/Ryder deck you will find that you can take the basic meanings that you have assimilated into your consciousness and bring them to any tarot deck that you purchase. In other words, the basic meanings of every tarot deck are the same. Yes, it is true that the symbolism is very different. The colours and pictures certainly vary. The nitty gritty basic meanings are so close to each other that it is really interesting.

I studied the history of the tarot and all the information that I could find about the art of reading these cards. There is a lot of history about card decks, generally and more specifically the tarot deck. When I decided to write this book, I made up my mind that the meanings listed here would be the simplest and the most informative that I could cause them to be. Working with these simplistic meanings will serve you well. Once you have conquered this fairly simple deck, you will then be ready to work with one of the more complicated decks. I find that I need to learn a new deck every so often, just for the challenge of the learning. It is often not that much of a challenge because of the similarities.

Your journey will be difficult and challenging; however, it will also be interesting as you discover that you, too, can find information about the present and the future in these cards. They will communicate with you individually as well as in a layout.

It is really necessary for you to memorize the meanings of the cards. There is really no easy way in which you can learn the meanings. Reading and rereading the information about each card is the most efficient way. You must read the meaning for each card at least three times; once for pleasure: - once to clarify the meaning - and once to assimilate the information totally into your mind and consciousness. Once you have filed this information away, you will find that your intuition brings you information to add to and enhance the basic meanings that you have.

    HISTORY OF THE CARDS

When I read many of the older books that contained information about the origin of any deck of cards, I found that there were accounts from many older countries that were powerful at the time that the books were written. Some of them spoke of full decks of cards being in existence as early as the tenth century. When I refer to a full deck I mean a deck which has seventy-eight cards in all. Many of these older decks had smaller numbers of cards than we are used to finding now. The smallest deck (in numbers of cards) that I have discovered has twenty-eight cards, each with a very specific meaning – no subtle information. The name gypsy may have been just that – a name. It is possible that someone, or a group in each of these countries, originated decks that were exactly the same at the same time. [ This could be due to the fact that there is a common consciousness, which is in our Universe that is accessible to everyone.]

As far as I can determine from the information that I could find in my research, all the decks were used to foretell the future. The religious and political leaders of the time objected to their loss of control over the thinking of the common people, and the use of cards for card games came into being to protect those seeking rays of hope for their futures. Those who were using the original decks of fifty-four cards found that there was not enough specific information in those cards. Thus the more specific and stronger cards, (the major arcana), were added one card at a time. Gradually more cards were created and, eventually, the deck of 78 cards came into being.

I am not sure how many tarot decks are in use at this time :but I am sure that there are at least 200 decks of tarot cards on the market. Once you have learned the basics with the Rider –Waite deck you will likely find that you wish to use a far different deck. Some readers like to keep the deck that they use for readings in a silk scarf, or in a wooden box that they especially like. It is vitally important that no one but the reader and the client touch the decks used for readings.

Containing the deck in a silk scarf or in a wooden box closes the energy into a small space and causes it to become stronger. These preferences are very important as they give the cards a special energy, even if this energy is only visible and useful for the reader.

This book is intended to give you a thorough basic knowledge of the tarot. You will be given some suggested layouts to use as you begin. These are layouts I have created. Their use is valuable, especially during the learning phase. Once you have learned these layouts thoroughly, you can then create your own layouts or use some that you find in other tarot books.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN READING WITH THE CARDS, IT IS VITAL FOR YOU TO DECIDE IF YOU WILL KEEP ALL OF THE CARDS UPRIGHT AFTER EACH READING, OR WHETHER YOU WILL CONSIDER BOTH THE UPRIGHT AND REVERSED MEANINGS BUT LEAVE THE CARDS AS THEY COME OUT OF THE DECK.

If you decide to read the upright and the reversed meanings by the position of the card then you need to bring the whole deck back into an upright position before you hand it to the client. Also, you would need to be very careful how you hand the deck to the client. If you hand it to them the wrong way up, they will have all of their reading from the reverse or negative meanings of the cards.

You would also find it necessary to bring the cards all back to an upright position before you put your deck away after any reading. This placing of the cards in an upright position would also have to be done between readings. I found it too much, so just read what signs seem strong.

The following are some simple rules that will
