Gems from Genesis - Conderidge Smith

What is a gem? According to the very ancient, paper-bound Webster’s Dictionary, a gem is anything of small size, expressed within brief limits, which is regarded as a gem on account of its beauty or value, as a small picture, a verse of poetry, a witty or wise saying. According to the very modern, internet-accessed WordNet dictionary, a gem is a precious stone incorporated into a piece of jewelry. Combine the old with the new, and thereby you will conceive of what I mean by gem from Genesis; a gem from Genesis is a curt explanation of either a verse or verses of the first book of the Bible, lovingly laid within the literary context of the whole book of Genesis in specific and whole Protestant canon of Christian Scripture in general.

But why gems from Genesis, and not giant stones instead? Giant stones are heavier, harder to move, and thus to maneuver require more time. And who has more time? Not you.

With that in mind, I have written Gems from Genesis for you---you who want, and need, a word from the LORD right now; you who want to hear from Heaven on a daily basis you who want to read some Bible daily, even if it only a verse, but have limited time to invest in the reading and researching of the Bible. Here are precious gems, jeweled from Genesis, petite, packed, and portable, ready for you to read in your bed, on your toilet, at your desk, on your couch, at the bus stop, on the train, and wherever else the Lord leads you to learn. Handle them as you would fine jewelry; hold them in your hand---and in your heart. Delve into this daily devotional on a daily basis, and display its worth to the world on the thus beautified body of your now Bible-bearing thoughts, words, and actions as you wear these Gems from Genesis.

    PROLOGUE: WHY FROM GENESIS?

Why did I go to Genesis to gather these gems? Because Genesis is the book that is all about beginnings. First, Genesis is the story of the beginning of the world, most especially the earth and all that is in it. In the beginning God created… (Genesis 1:1) are the first five words of the book, and from there the tale is told in detail appropriate to the Almighty how God made this and how He made that, all the way down, or shall I say all the way up, to human beings ourselves.

And what is the point of the book of beginnings, i.e. Genesis? Among many mini-messages, the major message of Genesis is this: out of nothing God made something (Genesis 1:1 , and out of something God made some-bodies to have rich relationship, i.e. intense important interpersonal interaction with him and with each other. And the good news is this---God is still making human beings to live, move, and be both in rich relationships, rich relational connections of heart, soul, mind, and body with him and with each other; and he has, and will, do whatever it takes to keep those connections!

And where, my friend, can you find this good news proclaimed, over and over and over again? The Bible! It is for this reason, also, that I have chosen to write, or rather to gather, gems out of the book of Genesis, namely, to promote Biblical literacy in a world and in a time of extreme ignorance of the actual, accurate content of the Christian Scriptures. After all, Genesis is the first book of the Bible. Read Genesis, and you will by so doing have seen the microscopic version of the Bible itself; for every issue of the Bible, in one way or another, is mentioned in the manuscript of Genesis. Life and death, sin and salvation, Heaven and Hell---the list goes on and on; and all that is on that list is all alluded to in Genesis. Yes, all of these issues, and dare I say all the issues of life, with their existential realities start at the Start, begin In the beginning… (Genesis 1:1), find their first mention in that wonderful work which is itself both the overview and introductory chapter of the written word of God, Genesis.

Genesis, then, entails at least two beginnings---one of the Bible and one of humanity. Is there a message from the LORD to you and me in this matter? I believe so: Start over starting now. Genesis is God’s invitation to us to begin at the beginning again, to be re-created anew and
