About this ebook

Reporter Thomas Allen arrives at a meeting with an old man claiming to have a story. Figuring this to be another rural small-town scandal, Tom keeps his expectations low. Kimberly A. Bettes

Kimberly A. Bettes was born on Thanksgiving Day, 1977, completely ruining any chance her mother had at enjoying a delightful dinner. At the age of 12, Kimberly began writing poems, essays, and short stories. At 14, she began her first novel, a project that would take two years and many sleepless nights to complete. Since then, she has written more than ten novels, dozens of short stories, and hundreds of poems and essays. She currently lurks in the Ozark Mountains of southeast Missouri with her husband and son. It's there she terrorizes the residents of a small town with her twisted tales, most of which focus on the dark side of human nature. In addition to writing, Kimberly is also a freelance photographer and life-long chocolate enthusiast.

    Chapter 1

The restaurant was packed when Tom walked in. He glanced around until he found an old man sitting alone, sipping coffee. Tom walked over to the man, weaving around tables and through the other diners.

The man looked up at Tom as he stopped at the table, and nodded slightly.

Are you Emmett Jacobson? asked Tom.

Sure am. You must be the reporter. The man nodded at the chair across the table from him. Sit. His southern accent was strong.

My name is Thomas Allen. You can call me Tom. Tom extended his hand to the man for a handshake. The old man gave him a firm but quick pump and let go. Thomas had felt his skin, hard from calluses and tough like leather.

    You can call me Emmett.

The waitress refilled Emmett’s cup with coffee and asked Tom if he wanted anything. He ordered ice water.

I’m glad to meet you, Emmett. But I’m afraid I really don’t know why I’m here. You didn’t explain yourself on the phone.

Emmett dumped sugar into his coffee and stirred it slowly. He placed the spoon on the saucer beside the cup, and then sipped his hot brew.

    "No, I don’t reckon I did. But I figured it’d
