John Porter

John Porter was born in Massachusetts and he started climbing at the age of twelve, serving his apprenticeship in the White Mountains, Rockies, Cascades and Yosemite. He moved to the UK in the early 1970s to do postgraduate work at Leeds University where he joined a team of climbers dedicated to clean ethics, alpine-style and the fostering of international partnerships. Ascents of the North Face of Koh-i-Bandaka (1977) and the south face of Changabang (1978) with Alex MacIntyre and Polish friends were achieved in the middle of the cold war. Other climbs include lightweight attempts of the west ridge of Everest in winter, the north-west ridge of K2, the east face of Sepu Kangri, first ascents of Chong Kundam I and V in the Eastern Karakoram, and many other notable climbs around the world over a period of fifty-five years. In 1980 he founded the Kendal Mountain Festival with Brian Hall and Jim Curran, and in 2011 he and Brian founded the online adventure film website SteepEdge. John lives in the Cumbrian Lake District working as a consultant in the energy sector. He is a vice president of the Alpine Club and has previously been a vice president of the British Mountaineering Council and secretary to the Mountain Heritage Trust.

    About The Author

    Welcome!

This short book is intended to be used by those who are seeking for confirmation of a growing faith within themselves, by those who are seeking true stories from Christians which they can study and use to build into their own belief systems, and for home groups, bible-study classes, and other organizations who seek a starting point for discussion. It may be found useful by people who are depressed, spiritually lost, or who simply need to be encouraged and cheered up a little.

Thanks be to God for giving me the experiences to write about, the ability to turn thoughts into written words, and for providing an outlet like Smashwords to broadcast these stories into the world!

    Ten Meditations

    An explanation

Each of the meditational stories is true, and I’ve written them just as they happened to me. I have used them to illustrate particular points, and ways in which the events I have described have brought me to a better understanding of God’s work within my life.

They may be useful for home church groups, or for individual readers to ponder over. I would like to think that they might provide a starting inspiration for those who feel so inclined to commence a diary of their own experiences, and perhaps to share their own writing and thoughts with others in a similar way.

I strongly recommend that the reader sits for a minute or so before reading the meditations, and allows God to enter their mind and clear it a little. I would also suggest that the scriptures indicated should be read and considered prior to reading each of the meditations.

But, as always, it’s up to yourself how you approach the Lord, and however you do so, you will always be welcomed!

    Let there be Light

    Retinal memory

    Read John 5:24

Jesus spoke to the Pharisees again. I am the light of the world, he said. Whoever follows me will have the light of life and will never walk in darkness. -John 8:12 (GNB)

How amazing is God! How astounding is the detail He has placed in this world! How much more so must be the heavenly realms!

Think for a moment of the astonishing nature of the gift of sight. Of course there’s foresight – when we’re given the ability to see where a bad decision will take us, or the rewards a good decision may bring. There’s also insight, when God’s Holy Spirit allows us to briefly see into another person’s heart and help us to empathise with them in their grief, or join with them in their elation. Hindsight is also a wonderful help to us, as we use the gift of memory to learn from our mistakes, make corrections to our lifestyle decisions, or address issues which might otherwise remain at odds with present circumstances.

But what I’m talking about here is the sense of sight – vision. One
