About the Author

Introduction

This book evolved from a series of classes that I teach on a regular basis at the Five Sisters Shop in Miami, Florida. My aim when writing about tarot or teaching the seminar is always the same: to demystify the subject and make it accessible to everyone. My philosophy with regard to divination is unfailingly practical, upbeat, and positive. While not attempting to sugarcoat any of the challenges, difficulties, or secrets that the tarot may uncover, I try to emphasize the positive attributes and concentrate on the possible solutions inherent in each of the seventy-eight cards.

Even if you are an absolute beginner, you will soon be able to employ the simple techniques provided here to unlock the ancient secrets of the tarot. When you have completed the courses you will have developed a good understanding of the tarot deck and its many uses. Armed with only your cards and a desire to learn, you’ll be reading the tarot like a pro in no time.

Although my main purpose is to show you how to use the cards for divination, the tarot can also help you understand yourself better and provide you with new ways to tap into your innermost resources. All you need to succeed is an open mind and a desire to develop your own natural abilities.

Part 1: Introduction to Tarot contains all the tarot basics and keyword meanings for all the cards to help get you started doing readings right away.

Part 2: Using the Cards for Divination offers a variety of spreads to help you interpret the fall of the cards. In addition you will find comprehensive instructions on how to choose and care for your decks, and how to conduct readings that provide insightful answers to your own and other people’s most pressing questions and concerns.

Part 3: Using the Cards for Self-Development and Empowerment provides numerous exercises and games employing tarot cards that can help illuminate everything from dreams and past life information to changing negative beliefs and improving your personal relationships. Also included are meditations, creative visualization exercises, and tarot spells that can help you change your reality for the better.

I hope that you are intrigued enough by the subject to find out for yourself all the wonderful things that you can do with a deck of tarot cards. Most of all, I hope that you will have fun learning the tarot and using the various techniques set out in this book.

Part One: Introduction to Tarot

Chapter 1: Tarot Basics

The standard tarot deck consists of seventy-eight cards. The cards are divided into two groups called the major arcana (greater mysteries) and the minor arcana (lesser mysteries). The twenty-two trump cards constitute the major arcana. The remaining fifty-six cards belong to the minor arcana, which are divided into four suits: wands, cups, pentacles, and swords. Each suit contains four picture or court cards, and ten pip or numbered cards.

The artwork on the seventy-eight cards of the standard tarot deck is rich with archetypal symbols. These symbols are universal in scope and help to activate the inner senses, allowing the reader to tap into a nonintellectual form of knowledge. You read the cards by relating a scenario based on the information that you receive from both your conscious and subconscious minds. Sometimes you’ll examine the cards in a spread, and all at once you’ll know their meanings in relation to the question. At other times you will analyze the layout, and then relate what you’ve learned about the cards to events and conflicts in the life of the questioner.

Remember that there is no right or wrong way to read tarot; no teacher, book, or specific system has a lock on the perfect method for interpreting the cards. The most any book or teacher can do is pass along some tips. Ultimately the only way to learn the tarot is through trial and error, and the best procedure for reading the cards is the one that works for you.

The Arcanas

The typical Tarot deck contains 78 cards, divided into the major arcana (22 cards) and the minor arcana (56 cards). Think of the majors as archetypal events, and big issues that concern character and destiny. The minors are more about circumstances and behavior, and illustrate situations and events in daily life.

The majors or trump cards, numbered from zero to twenty-one, are ports in a journey that begins with the wildly innocent enthusiasm of The Fool and ends with the sophisticated knowledge of The World. They are the most powerful cards in the deck. Sometimes, the majors tell you all you need to know to understand the dynamics in a person's life.

The minors are divided into four suits - wands, cups, pentacles, and swords. They correspond to the four elements, the four personality types, the four seasons. The four suits are the DNA of the minor arcana, the building blocks.

Each suit is numbered from one through ten and has four court cards. The pips or numbered cards represent the patterns which the archetypes weave through our lives; the court cards usually represent people or behavior patterns. In some decks, you'll find the court cards called something else - the page and knight, for instance, may be prince and princess. But if you're just beginning with the tarot, it's easiest to work with decks that use traditional names for the court cards.

The mundane and esoteric meanings for the cards will vary, depending on which decks you use and which
