Chapter One
As the sun rose over the Caribbean Sea, its powerful rays pushing through the early-morning mist and the last threads of darkness, it illuminated an ancient, rotting galleon, a huge Man of War long past its intended working life.
James Hartwell, ex-captain of the British Navy, was uneasily aware of the condition of the galleon. He and the two crews on board had worked through the night to shore up the bulkheads, fix any leaks and pump out water from the lower levels. Any sane captain would never have set foot on the ancient vessel, or at least they would have sailed directly to land and abandoned the ship to its watery grave. Hartwell was at a loss to explain why he wanted to keep the old ship seaworthy, but then, he was at a loss to explain the last day or so.
Barely twenty-four hours earlier had seen him captain of the Pride of Plymouth, the joint most powerful ship of the English fleet. He had been under the command of Admiral Johnson. Their mission, to eliminate slave traders and pirates from the Caribbean. Unfortunately, it had transpired that the admiral was determined to start his own slave trade and he intended to begin his campaign by killing any that stood in his way–and the most obvious man who stood in the way was Hartwell himself.
Hartwell’s escape had been fortuitous and had involved the ancient galleon on which he now prowled. Not that the galleon would ever have been able to outrun or outfight any warship of the English navy. Only an inexplicable fireball smashing into the ocean had provided the cover for Hartwell and those loyal to him to escape.
The fireball had also provided something else—a strange silver woman, found floating in the sea. A woman made of metal and cogs and strange mechanical devices embedded in her organic frame, all covered with a soft, shining, silver skin.
The woman’s constitution did not bother Hartwell that much, as he accepted people for their character rather than their appearance. What did bother him was the effect she had on his feelings. From the moment he had looked into her vivid blue eyes after rescuing her from the ocean, he had known he was no longer the master of his own heart.
His gaze stole over to the silver woman who was leaning against the figurehead of the ship, looking out to sea, a position she had held for several hours. Somehow, he knew she was aware of his presence, just as he was aware of hers. However, he had to put his duty to the crew before his own feelings and in any case, the revelations of the previous night—that he and the crew were being changed by the technology that permeated the silver woman—meant that Hartwell felt he could not trust the enigmatic Lady Mechatronic.
Hartwell’s musings were halted by the appearance of Fitch, Madrigal and Nani from the lower deck. Fitch had been the First Lieutenant on the Pride of Plymouth. Madrigal had been Admiral Johnson’s contact from Pirate Cove. He had stolen the galleon in order to meet with the Admiral in the belief that Johnson would honour
