Hi! I'm Ellie Forsythe and I'm a chicklit writer. I found the genre in an airport on a trip and fell in love. I could hardly think of writing anything else and I love to base my books in Scotland.

    Chapter 1

Kelly watched Ava leave the café. It had been Ava’s last shift before she headed to London for her friend’s wedding. Kelly had a feeling that the girl wasn’t coming back, at least not without some boxes for her stuff. She wiped the counter down one more time, waving to Zach, one of the new part-time staff they’d hired. As the manager, she was closing down the café for the day. She’d sent everyone home a bit early, capable of handling the last trickle of customers and shooing out the ones reluctant to leave.

The café consumed her life ever since she’d moved to West Lafayette three years ago. Desperate for a job, she’d been lucky that Mamie had taken a chance on her when she’d had very little experience and in return, Kelly worked harder than anyone else for the old lady. Mamie was rarely around anymore and Kelly didn’t really need to work as much as she did but it was habit now. She knew almost everyone in the town from their drink orders and their preferred pastries. Mamie’s had some competition with two other cafés in town but since it was the oldest, and Mamie was well-loved, it was the most popular.

Only people who were new to the town or didn’t like someone who worked at Mamie’s frequented the other cafes. For everyone else, they were a last resort when the line to the counter was too long or the tables were all full. Kelly wanted to keep that going and she was proud of being the only manager. She’d worked for it and proved herself and she intended to be the best decision Mamie ever made.

But it was because of Mamie’s kindness in giving her a chance that Kelly herself had decided to offer a job to Christine. Along with Zach and Luke, Christine had applied for a job as soon as Ava’s handmade sign was in the window but she’d never worked before. At first, Kelly had considered just throwing her application out but in the end decided to give her a shot.

Christine’s first day was tomorrow and even though Kelly wasn’t booked for a shift, she was going to be there. With only Tracy and Daniel there to help Christine, Kelly decided she would come in to make sure they weren’t run off their feet trying to juggle training and their own work. Besides, she didn’t have much else going on, so she might as well spend the time making money.

Kelly locked up the door behind her, stuffing the keys in her coat pocket. Though it was still mild in Virginia late in October, it wasn’t quite warm enough once the sun set to go without a jacket. She didn’t live too far away from Mamie’s café. For once in her life she was making steady, decent money and could afford an apartment that she didn’t mind spending time in.

In fact, she spent more and more time there since she’d rescued her new companion. Kelly was aware that a single woman of her age with a cat had the potential to turn into a crazy cat lady but that didn’t stop her from adopting the stray from the SPCA. Gilly was a large Maine Coon who had been found meowing at the doors and was never claimed from the shelter. She and Kelly had only lived together for a couple of months now but Kelly was surprisingly used to the cat’s presence. She wasn’t as exuberant as a dog and not nearly as excited to see Kelly as a puppy might have been but she required less care and attention because of that. Gilly was happy to follow the light shining in the windows, moving as the sun moved across the sky.

‘Gilly!’ Kelly called when she got in. She was a bit later than normal and Gilly would probably be hoping for dinner. The large cat came flying out of her bedroom, meowing and twining around Kelly’s ankles.

‘I thought you might be hungry.’ They trooped into the kitchen to get Gilly some dinner. Always eager for more food, Gilly hopped up onto the counter and started nosing around the bucket of cat food.

Kelly pushed her away. ‘If you just wait a second…’ Kelly poured a cupful of dry cat food into the silver bowl on the floor. Gilly jumped down and buried her face in the food. Kelly refilled her water dish and went into the bedroom to change.

Her closet was mostly black and white, café appropriate. The days she didn’t work were rare so the clothes she changed into after working didn’t look very different to the black shorts and white t-shirt she’d just been wearing. But they didn’t smell like the café, which allowed her to start to unwind which she did best either in front of the TV or in the kitchen.

Kelly liked old movies. Black and white movies, Technicolor movies, anything that wasn’t recent. Her collection was smaller than she would have liked but with channels like Turner Classic Movies, she didn’t have to rely solely on her collection. And if she liked a movie enough she might buy it. After a poor childhood, Kelly wasn’t interested in living that same lifestyle. She lived on much less than she needed to, saving most of her money for that proverbial rainy day. It was hard to predict a disaster so it was better to be prepared. Even a movie purchase was something to think
