Introduction
The objective of this booklet is to provide a thorough analysis of exactly what Tatian (2nd century A.D.) believed in his orthodoxy. It is generally accepted that Tatian was a student of Justin Martyr and he is accused by Irenaeus (2nd century A.D.) on being lifted up with pride because of this.¹ From what we can gather from comments by the early church fathers, it seems that Tatian ventured off into erroneous teaching later in life as the founder of an ascetic group called the Encratites. It is reported by some of the early church fathers that he denounced all sexual activity as impure even in marriage. He seems to have allowed sexual relations in marriage in order to overcome temptation as suggested by Paul, but at the same time discourages the practice
