      The history of quilts

      Quilting has been around for centuries, but there is no confirmation about the exact origin. According to historians the history of quilting, piecing and appliqué of fabrics was widely used for clothing and decorating soft furnishings and walls of homes in ancient times. There is thought that quilting originated in China and Egypt at the same time. The oldest quilted garment found dates back to somewhere around 3400 BC.

      Back in the 11th century, the crusaders picked up a type of quilting from the Middle East and brought it back to Europe. Quilted pieces of cloth were used by the Knights of that era to give them extra cushioning under their armor. Later on the Romans introduced quilted bedding, which was used as mattresses. It was in the 15th century that Europeans found quilting a good idea for garments to keep out the cold winds in the winter season.

      The very first quilts were made of layers of cloth that were attached together with running stitches. Quilt Frames came into existence as it was difficult to stitch many layers of cloth together. Europeans, blessed with these frames started to create quilts that were more decorative and more finely stitched.

      19th century marked a great period of quilting in Europe and America. People in villages would come together and make one or more quilts in an afternoon. Women were very pleased with this as they could come out of the boundaries of their home and could contribute in doing something useful.

      Many examples of these beautiful quilts are still to be found in museums in Europe. The amazing thing about many of them is that they are still in a reasonable good state. Many keen quilters copy these antiquated designs as they are so beautiful.

      Preserving the quilting tradition

      My grandmother and mother are both quilters. I love looking at the works of art that each have created over the years. My sister and I decided that we would like to learn how to quilt to keep this tradition alive in the family. Our mother makes very elaborate appliqué quilts. We knew that we did not want to start with something that complicated. We went to a fabric store together to find quilting patterns for beginners. The sales clerk suggested that we start with a patchwork quilt. This would be less difficult and also less expensive.

      A patchwork quilt consists of different fabrics cut into pieces and sewed together to create the quilt top. A coordinating solid or print fabric is used for the back of the quilt and a batting is placed in between. The top and back are then quilted together through hand sewing with thread, or by tying knots through all the layers with pieces of yarn. That process is known as tying a quilt.

      Each patchwork quilt is different because the quilter decides if each piece of fabric will be the same size and shape and also how to arrange the pieces. The clerk suggested using the same size squares of each fabric and to alternate the fabrics to create a sequence in the colors. As people get more involved
