Ray Wiseman's early memory--being pushed up a rope ladder and over the side of a tramp steamer at age two--set the tone for his life. He has spent much time travelling, and most of his life looking from the hilltop of one adventure to the beginning of the next. Born in England, Ray has lived in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and South Africa. He has traveled in Africa and Asia. Ray counts writing as his fourth career. He began his working life as an electronics technician, then returned to school to study for the Christian ministry. He spent time in the pastorate and overseas with a missionary society. He returned to electronics, working as a video systems engineer. In 1993, he took early retirement to pursue a career as a writer and speaker. Ray graduated from Radio College of Canada (now RCC Schools) in 1952. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Waterloo and a Bachelor of General and Biblical Studies from Briercrest College. He has also studied at the Toronto Institute of Linguistics and The International Institute of Christian Communications (Daystar University College) in Nairobi. Ray is a member of The Word Guild, an association of Canadian authors and writers who are Christian.

    Foreword

    By the Reverend Dr. John Kao

    It has been my great privilege and delight to read through the life story and missionary endeavours of the Reverend Dr. Paul Chang whom I have known as a good friend and co-worker for more than half of a century. I had heard many stories from this book in his talks on various occasions. It is amazingly interesting - especially to audiences with a western cultural background. The author adds much colourful imagery to make this biography lively and dramatic. He has done considerable research in specific areas of history that many readers will find helpful.

    Paul and I encountered similar circumstances during the earlier years of our lives. I admire Paul’s courage in the journey of faith and adventure and the wonderful protection and provision of our heavenly Father. During the early 1950s, Paul’s positive attitude toward various facets of life appeared capricious to those around him - not serious enough in the face of life’s difficulties. Praise the Lord that He furnished good opportunities for Paul to study in America. We were especially grateful to God when He provided Nien-chang as Paul’s help-meet and encourager. As it is said, Behind every great man there is a great woman. As friends, we often felt that Nien-chang deserved much more behind-the-scene credit as Paul’s life story played out. After their marriage, their life appeared to have more steadfastness and focus on the work of the Lord.

    Their talents in music have made them a perfect couple in deputational ministries. Their simple life style and willingness to relocate to different countries have contributed to their success in becoming an admirable missionary family. They have great compassion for poor and suffering people. Praise the Lord for the excellent influence of the Chang family in preaching the gospel and caring for the needy. Paul and Nien-chang have raised abundant support for the poverty stricken fields in Southeast Asia. Paul’s pioneering spirit in developing various regions of national ministry is rare among his peers, our Chinese co-workers. I think the Reverend Allen and Ruth Finley deserve much credit as Paul and Nien-chang’s mentors--and for developing other national Christian leaders.

    During the earlier phase of his leadership in ministry, Paul did encounter much resistance and misunderstanding; it might well be that Paul himself, like his daughter Ruth, faced a certain degree of identity crisis. It might serve us all better if we took more of an incarnational approach in accommodating the native culture and exercised more interpersonal skills in dealing with co-workers.

    Praise the Lord! He has come a long way toward maturity in Christian spirituality, leadership, and creativity in missionary services. Paul and Nien-chang’s dedication and faithfulness in the unwavering ministry of CNEC/Partners International have won the admiration of our co-workers and Christian circle at large. I am greatly honoured to be a friend and co-worker of the Chang family.

    I recommend this excellent book for all individuals and church libraries, for missionary education and encouragement, so that God would raise up more missionaries like the Chang family.

    Introduction

    To Western eyes, China appears merely as a shadow on the eastern horizon of history. Occidentals know it exists but can’t quite see it beyond the clutter of their own great European empires, technological advances, and glorious civilizations.

    Chinese people look to their western horizon and write off what they see as fractured societies and bankrupt cultures that have barely shrugged off the darkness of the Middle Ages. They look inward and see threads of a great civilization spanning thousands of years of history, culture, and arts, often interrupted, sometimes influenced, but never broken by changing dynasties, invasions, and other contacts with the rest of the world.

    The ancient concept of China as the centre of the world still has validity today in the minds of modern Chinese people.

    When I visited China in 1994, I had no idea I would one day write a book against the backdrop of Chinese history and culture. Like most westerners, I had a distorted view of China. But we all have much to learn and modern China handed me a few surprises. I wrote the following, published in the Guelph Mercury in March of that year.

    CUI HENG, CHINA: I fully expected China to look dreary and drab, its people dull, humourless, and committed to the party line, and its industry outdated and primitive. What else could one expect after a half century of Communism? But not everything fitted my preconceptions.

    The buildings, roads, and countryside, all seemed painted by one brush dipped in one colour, a dull pale brown. I might have been looking at China in a collection of old sepia photographs. I mentally checked off my first expectation. Yes, China looks dreary and drab.

    The Chinese tour guide seemed a little disappointed that only a few of the Canadians on the bus had heard of Sun Yat-sen. She said, We are approaching the village of Cui Heng, the birthplace of the founder of modern China. Sun Yat-sen overthrew the Manchurian emperors and founded the first Chinese republic in 1912.

    I am sure you have all heard of Chiang Kai-shek, she continued. They were brothers-in-law. But Sun Yat-sen had a rather different view of China. Chiang would have returned us to a monarchy. That is why the Chinese people rejected him."

    I smiled as the guide echoed the party or government line. For the most part she had seemed unbiased and open as she discussed the accomplishments and problems of the People’s Republic of China. She had joked about our physical differences as we approached the border of a special economic area. People need a special permit to live or visit this area, she said. They check each person who goes through for the right papers. But they won't bother us. They will see the big eyes and big noses and wave us through.

    In fact they did enter our bus long enough to check the passports of the two young ladies from Hong Kong who travelled with us. As we pulled away, the guide said, Sometimes, they make a mistake and pull over Japanese tourists. You can tell the difference between Chinese and Japanese can't you?

    When none of us answered, she placed her fingers at the outer edges of her eyes and began distorting their shape, saying, Chinese eyes slope down like this, but Japanese eyes slope upward like this. Sometimes Japanese tourists wear sun glasses, but you can still recognize them. You know how don't you? Again we disappointed her with our ignorance. Shaking her head and waving her finger she said, By their cameras!

    I remembered my second expectation: Chinese people are dull, humourless, and committed to the party line. Wrong there; none of the people I met, and certainly not this tour guide, fitted that description.

    Our Mitsubishi bus bumped and vibrated as we sped down a modern multi-lane highway. However, the problem originated with the road, not the bus. The concrete surface didn't have the mirror-like finish we expect in Canada. I guessed they had built it with light equipment and hand labour. Our bus swung wide to pass a row of mini-trucks, each one loaded with building materials. The power plants looked like garden tractors, the kind you walk behind and steer with long handlebars - except that they pulled trailers. The driver sat on the front of the trailer and gripped the handlebars to control the vehicle. I thought: Those things are modern versions of the age-old ox cart.

    Our guide interrupted my thoughts: Coming up next you will see modern factories. We have attracted a number of international companies to begin joint ventures in this special economic zone. You might think of this area as the Silicon Valley of China. I saw modern factories, some displaying the names of well-known Japanese electronics firms. The sepia look had vanished; it could have been an industrial subdivision anywhere in the world. Well, almost anywhere - the bumpy road reminded me we had not left China.

    My third expectation, that China depended on outdated and primitive industry, had proven partly right, but mostly wrong. I saw China emerging from the past and racing toward the future. I have a strong feeling all of us will become much more aware of China in the next few years.

    Since writing that piece and having begun a study of China, its people, and the life of the Reverend Dr. Paul Chang (born Chang Bao-wha), I have received many more surprises. I trust that you too will experience the same sense of wonder as you enter the orient through the pages of this book.

    Prologue

    What you do not want done to yourself, do not do unto others. The injuries done to you by an enemy should be returned with a combination of love and justice.

    So said Kung Fu Tzu,* China’s most revered teacher and philosopher. He envisioned a land where everyone sought to live a good life, where morality would flow upward from the family through society to the nation’s leaders who would rule with justice, and all would live in harmony.

    It didn’t turn out that way.

    Six-year-old Bao-wha walked the inside perimeter of his narrowed world. He wanted to leave the compound and race freely along paths that led through the fields to friends’ houses. He yearned to climb trees looking for birds’ nests, catch grasshoppers, and collect papers to sell to the paper mill. He could still play football with friends who lived within the walls, but he yearned to escape the bricks and mortar that had become his prison.

    However, he dared not leave the grounds of the seminary since the day his father, Chang Hsueh Kung, had forbidden all trips beyond the wall.

    The Japanese Imperial Army now rules our province, his father had said. They have done unspeakable things to Chinese people. Leaving the compound would put you in extreme danger. For now we are safe within the walls.

    Bao-wha wrestled with concepts that no child should ever face. The Japanese had invaded and ravaged the countryside around his home in Teng-xian, northern China. Because the Chang family lived within the walls of the Northern China Theological Seminary, the invaders had stopped short of their home, but not due to respect for religious institutions. They hesitated because an American flag flew at the gate and several American missionary families lived within the compound. The Japanese did not yet wish to provoke the United States to enter the war.

    During his solitary walk, Bao-wha approached the church. Slipping inside for a few moments, he felt the cool floor on his bare feet, but a touch of warmth burned within. Was God present here in the same way he had lived in the Tabernacle? He liked to think the Japanese soldiers could see a pillar of fire above the church and dare not enter the grounds for fear God would strike them dead. He liked to believe God, not the American flag, kept the invaders beyond the walls.

    Outside again, he walked by the seminary dormitories and continued on until he reached the family home. A twinge of resentment shot through his body. Strangers now occupied it, filling every room, preparing food in his mother’s kitchen, and sleeping in his bedroom. Father had given away their house.

    Refugees, Father had said, here they will find safety from the Japanese. We can move into the second floor of the dormitory.

    They had done exactly that, but even as they moved into their new quarters, Father had issued another warning. We must use even more care since giving sanctuary to the refugees. The enemy will seek other ways to threaten or intimidate us.

    Bao-wha now turned back toward the dormitory. The growing sound of hundreds of footsteps filled the air. He paused to listen, but when he heard strange words spoken in Japanese, he raced for the dormitory. His short legs became a blur of energy as he shot up the stairs, past the rooms where he now lived, and up a ladder into the attic.

    Dropping to his knees, he pushed the shutter open. From here he could see over the west wall to the railway tracks that skirted the seminary on that side. From an attic window, Bao-wha watched as soldiers of the Japanese Imperial army marched hundreds of Chinese people along the railway track and crowded them together like a herd of human animals.

    What are they doing? the boy wondered. Is this a parade? Are they going on a picnic? In a moment he knew. The murderous clatter of machine-gun fire echoed off the seminary walls and buildings. People fell like small trees before a bulldozer. Within a minute hundreds lay dead and dying on the tracks. A few, still living, sought safety beneath the bodies of fallen comrades.

    Gun smoke drifted over the wall; its acrid smell reached the attic. While Bao-wha watched, soldiers stacked the bodies and doused them with gasoline. They drew back and hurled a torch into the pile of rejected humanity. Even as the flames exploded skyward, the child saw isolated arms and legs move as if attempting a last-minute escape.

    The foul smell of burning flesh accosted Bao-wha’s nose and lungs as the inferno turned the dead, dying, and hiding into a charred mound.

    Three thousand years of Chinese history had suddenly converged on one small boy. For centuries foreign armies had invaded and raped the Chinese countryside, driving the common people into hiding - making them refugees in their own land - wantonly killing innocent people, destroying farms, and pillaging factories. The Japanese army, as though in a frenzy to repeat history, would soon breach the fragile protection of a foreign flag and desecrate the church within the wall. Before Bao-wha could grow up, other armies would follow, driving his family southward, and crushing the symbols and remnants of Christianity in its wake.

    Is China forever destined to repeat the cycles of peace and invasion? Of good government followed by rebellion? Of Christian penetration succeeded by utter expulsion?

    Part 1: The Power of History and Culture

    Chapter 1: Links to the past

    The Bible says, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1) . . ., and, In the beginning was the Word and the Word was God. (John 1:1)

    And so the life story of any man truly begins - not with a childhood adventure - but in the remote historical and cultural dawn of his nation. To fully understand Paul Chang, born Chang Bao-wha, we must go back, way back

    According to Chinese folklore, the Chinese people originated in the Huang He valley.* In their tradition the world and mankind came about through the creative actions of one who appeared as God and man merged into one being. Legend tells us P’an Ku (Pan Gu) broke free from embryonic chaos, appearing from an egg as a creature with two horns, two tusks, and a hairy body. Some versions say he separated heaven and earth, divided the four seas, put sun, moon and stars in place, and chiselled out mountains and valleys to shape the world. Mythology claims that a series of heavenly, terrestrial, and human sovereigns succeeded him.

    Archaeological evidence indicates the people grew rice in eastern China about 5500 BC and, about five centuries later, an agricultural society developed in the Huang He valley. Strong evidence exists to support two so-called pottery cultures, the Yang-shao culture (4000–1700 BC), and the Lung-shan culture (2000–1850 BC).

    Sometime after 1100 BC during the Zhou Dynasty, the mandate of heaven emerged - a political concept that teaches heaven gives a mandate to rule to wise and virtuous leaders. Under this doctrine, the emperor became known as the Son of Heaven. In time the concept expanded to include the Taoist theory that heaven disapproves bad rulers through natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, and plagues. It also allowed for rebellion by the people against tyrannical rulers and for the rebel leaders to claim the mandate of heaven to rule in place of the deposed emperor.

    This gave rise to the dynastic cycle, which maintains that when the moral quality of the ruling family erodes, heaven will pass power on to others. Hence an endless cycle began in which dynasties rose, prospered, became corrupt, and then gave way to new, just rulers.

    At this time the Chinese also developed the concept of a separate identity. Even when divided into separate kingdoms they maintained a belief in the superiority of their culture. They identified as barbarians all those who lived beyond their borders.

    Let us from the West remember that we - always ready to judge others - also have problems with ethnocentricity and have believed in such doctrines as the divine right of kings * and manifest destiny. **
