Waldo Malan

Waldo Malan loves music. Because of this love he has been involved on all levels of music since he was a child. His interest in music led him to the Drakensberg Boys Choir School, of which he was a member from age 9 through 15. While there he not only toured the world, but sang and started composition lessons in serialism with the Australian composer David Worrall at age 11. Incidentally, this was also the year in which he started with his piano studies. After matriculating at a co-ed, pro-rugby school on the Witwatersrand, he continued his musical studies at the University of the Witwatersrand. It was here that he was to remain from 1983 until 1997, first reading for his Bachelor degree, and ending up in the School of Music as a lecturer. Since the beginning of 1998 he has chosen to pursue the mission fields of South Africa and has dedicated his life to the call of God. Composition remains an active love and he has performances all over South Africa on a regular basis. In 2001 he was awarded his Doctor of Music degree in Composition. Many of his compositions are now also sung in churches. His professional compositional career started in 1983 with the writing of the incidental music for “At The Gate” at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg. Subsequent to that he composed incidental music for number of shows at theatres all across South Africa. In addition he was also active both as musical director, accompanist, arranger and recording artist. His endeavours in the field of composition has rewarded him with the following prizes and awards: 1987 Winner of the Amfest-Musoc Composer’s Award (Serious Music Category) 1991 SAMRO Merit Prize for Composition 1992 Study Grant from the British Council 1992 Winner of the Overseas Scholarship for Composition from the Foundation for The Creative Arts 1993 Overall winner of the Total Music Collection Composition Competition 1994 Finalist in the FOYSA awards He is currently the Director of Media for the River Group in East London where his duties range from worship leading to overseeing all aspects of media. He is married to Sharon and has 2 children.

    Father

    Dear Father.

    I can't begin to try and explain what it is I think I understand about You. All I know is that You have become central in my life and You are always just there. Sometimes You are in sharp focus and at other times You are on the periphery of my vision, but somehow You always feature. Every choice that I make, and every direction that I decide upon, You are there. Since I made the decision to have You as part of my life, You have faithfully committed to that choice. Now I find that You are directly in front of me when I make choices according to Your way of doing things. When I know I am compromising on set standards in my life, I acknowledge You outside the boundaries of my playing field, and sometimes (and for this I profusely apologize) I push You behind me so that You are out of sight! I am sorry Lord. No matter how I decide on the matters governing the course of my life, You are there – a type of axis which my life revolves around. For better and for worse. In sickness and in health. Thank You! Thank You that You choose to make Yourself the one consistency in my life. I love You and I appreciate You. And so today I (again) pledge to keep You ahead and not behind, not outside my field but the focus and purpose of my journey. Your son.

    father

    you are

    focus,

    centre,

    axis;

    may my life find

    tempo

    in you.

    I will never let You go

    Dear Father.

    How can I explain Your Father heart to my daughter? Won't You please help me to make a time and a place and give me the delivery - give me the right words to say to show my child how important it is to follow You? Not because she must but because she wants to! You have never forced our relationship but You have always wanted it. Thank You for Your gentle wooing. Let me show Samantha how central You are to our lives, our existence and our very breath...

    (a song for Samantha)

    daddy i will never let you go,

    never, never let you go,

    daddy i will never let you go,

    daddy i love you so!

    you are my sunrise, you are my sun,

    you are the sunbeam on my face,

    daddy i will never let you go!

    you are my morning, you are my noon,

    in your heart i have my room,

    daddy i will never let you go!

    you are the sweetener in my tea,

    you're in everything i see,

    daddy i will never let you go!

    you are the icing on my cake,

    you're in every choice i make,

    daddy i will never let you go!

    you are the petrol in my car

    you make me go so very far

    daddy i will never let you go!

    you are my centre, you are my all

    you're my universe, i call:

    daddy i will never let you go!

    geseënde vadersdag

    so baie keer wonder ek

    wat om te sê,

    maar die vraag is dalk eerder

    hoe om te sê wat ek wil sê;

    hierdie dag is ontwerp

    om ons te verskerp en

    ons verstand te fokus

    op die betekenis van

    Vader:

    eerstens van bo

    tweedens van ons af

    en laaste

    (en dalk die belangrikste)

    van my tot jou;

    ek wil sê dat ek jou waardeer

    maar die woord is te mak.

    ek wil graag 'baie dankie' sê

    maar weereens klink dit hol.

    ek wil sê ek is lief vir jou

    en in daardie woord klink die

    eggo van 'n hemelse klank

    en begin ek nou

    om die woord in

    die holte van my hart te hou;

    ek is waarderend dankbaar

    vir jou

    en in die kennis van ons eie Vader

    begin ek verstaan:

    ek is lief vir jou.

    Psalm 31:19

    My God, how abundant You are! How utterly sufficient You abound in exceeding fullness and might You do and make better more than anyone or anything else. All of this, Your multiplicity and greatness, You have hoarded, reserved and protected to give away all good things to those who make the choice to worship You, and to worship You alone! In a sense You deny Yourself Your own goodness (good things) just to give it away to Your creation; to give away to those that choose to walk in worshipful reverence before You. God You systematically and habitually do this, as if You were in a never-ending process practising giving Yourself to those who love You, and to those of Your creation that have chosen to place their hope, trust and
