As he sat behind the large antique desk, he was enjoying the serenity of his private office. His staff knew that he was not to be disturbed during that early hour of the day, unless it was a matter of dire emergency.
At that time of morning, the desk was cleared of paperwork. John had insisted for years that all paperwork be cleared away at the end of each day, so that he could start the next day with a clean slate.
The desk itself was a beautiful piece of furniture that was more than one hundred and fifty years old. There was a lot of history connected with it. There were very few items that were allowed a place of honor on the desk. One of these items was a gold pen and pencil set that John’s father had given to him when he graduated from Harvard Law School.
There were also three photographs in antique frames. One
