About this ebook

A collection of the published writings (so far!) from author Josh Karaczewski, including the Pushcart Prize nominated titular story. Through mostly short stories, you will meet a homecoming warrior defeated by housework (ouch!), a lonely debut author impatient for recognition (imagine that!), a son losing a boyfriend because of his mother (imagine that!), boys doing boy stuff (no batteries required!), a man who is awakened into a new title (enjoy your sleep now!), rediscovering children's literature (Viva Sendak!), the thoughts of someone who falls from great heights to the ground (on purpose!), and a support group meeting where an unhappy man discusses the unwise steps he took that made him ultimately unhappier (silly men!).

Author

Josh Karaczewski

Josh lives in the San Francisco Bay Area (which is a catch-all meaning that he doesn't live in any of the cool Bay Area cities), and studied at Westmont College in Santa Barbara (though his degree is not in English). Josh is a husband (rapturously happy), father (blissfully proud), and teacher (public high school - I know, ouch). Josh enjoys reading (primarily fiction), writing (obviously), video games (especially shooters and platformers), art (creation and appreciation), film (just appreciation), and travel (9 out of 10 times this means Disneyland). On his writing, Josh writes literary fiction that doesn't take itself too seriously.

    Dedications

First and forever foremost this is for Steph, Jake, Liv & Ben – otherwise known as those that make living a worthwhile enterprise.

And since this compilation includes my first published works, I wanted to acknowledge the two great creative writing teachers whose instruction, criticism, and encouragement kept the idea that no matter what my career would be, writing would always be something I would do in my life.

Let me begin by lauding Andrew Schwartz. First, in high school junior English, he introduced me to contemporary literature; then he created a creative writing class as an alternative to basic senior English, where he showed me ways to create contemporary literature. I wasn’t ready for every path he presented me with (it took a while for Toasted Susie is my ice cream to have the potential to be more than funny nonsense), but he showed me where to find the trailheads. (And his college letter of recommendation certainly helped to put me on my literal course).

Finally, I celebrate the enthusiasm for language and literature being taught by Paul Willis at Westmont College. The eagerness with which he accepted his students’ work, as if he were always receiving gifts; his anticipation to know where we were taking him with our stories and poems; the sense and reason when he reflected on the experiences we gave him with our writing; all these exemplified for me the blessings of the writer’s life, which I continue in my small
