This human body at peace with itself, is more precious than the rarest gem. Cherish your body, it is yours for this one time only. The human form is won with difficulty; it is easy to lose. All worldly things are brief, like lightening in the sky. This life you must know was the tiny splash of a raindrop. A thing of beauty that passes away even as it comes into being. Therefore set your goal, and make every day and night a time to attain it. – Lama Tsong Khapa

All ailments, diseases and syndromes respond to the use of food as medicine (unknown).

    Introduction

Using food therapeutically dates back many centuries. Fasts are an ancient food practice and are well documented, predominantly in religious texts. Many historic writings or traditions also include references to food and herbs. In ancient times herbs, including culinary ones, were known for their medicinal attributes. The distinction between food and medicine was quite blurred. Nowadays much of this medicinal food culture has been lost or it re-emerges on the nightly news as a sudden breakthrough in scientific research. Meanwhile the food in the average household kitchen bears little resemblance to the original farm produce that composes it. All too often vitamins and minerals are stripped away through intensive farming or lost during lengthy shipment, storage and processing. Processed foods can be so laden with chemical additives that they no longer resemble traditional food. Some processed foods even have to have vitamins and minerals added to compensate for their loss in production. This book, Heal with Food – Food Farmocopoeia, is a useful beginning to reclaim food-lore and blend it with modern scientific knowledge of nutritional medicine. Increasingly my advice to clients in clinic is to actually eat real food again and to prepare it themselves with love and caring. Time and again this simple concept proves to be a valuable recipe for health and well-being.

This book is intended for use by health professionals and the general public. It aims to help people everywhere achieve their health potential and relieve suffering. It is a quick desk or kitchen reference and I thank you for making this book a part of your life, I trust it will serve you. Be well and whole!

    – Debbie Pannowitz

    How to use this book

This publication presents various common conditions, arranged alphabetically and the reader is guided on what to eat as well as what to limit or perhaps avoid altogether. The focus is generally on what should be consumed rather than a more negative approach of itemising foods to avoid. If a number of conditions apply, be careful to ensure that what may be recommended to eat for one condition is not a problem food for another.

Increasing the intake of certain foods is given as advice throughout this book. Do so only if you do not have a sensitivity or allergy to that food.
