50 Poems & Musings for Ropepullers
()
About this ebook
A collection of fifty poems & musings by couple, William & Elizabeth Hicks, along with their brother, Joseph Hicks. The writings are a combination of memories & imaginings inspired by real life events, people, art & books. They are free-form & are intended to be both fun & inspiring. They capture the imagination & pull the reader away from life's mundane work, which is symbolized by the rope.
Elizabeth Hicks
Elizabeth Emily Hicks and William Raymond Hicks, both natives of Southern California, are a husband and wife team who met through a transformational workshop environment. During much personal growth together, Elizabeth, a.k.a. Elise, and William were inspired to write Wings, The Journey Home. Elise and William are both students of history, psychology, self-empowerment, metaphysics and quantum physics. Their intention is to teach what they have learned in a fun and inspiring way. ‘Wings’ is their first published book, and they are working on several other books, including a book of poems, short stories, and musings.

Ropepullers - Part I
by Joseph Hicks
(inspired by the painting Ropepullers
by William R. Hicks)
The sun is ablaze in the African sky.
Majestic stone pyramids tower over the burning desert sands of Ancient Egypt.
The time: 3,000 B.C.
Barefoot, bare-chested, with a simple cloth protecting their sweat drenched heads,
the slaves shuffle along, one behind the other, across the burning sand.
They are lined up in several, carefully structured rows.
Heavy, taught ropes are slung over one shoulder.
They heave, every muscle of their bodies straining to pull the massive blocks of granite across the sand to their destination.
The crack of the slave drivers’ whips, and the responding cries of pain, permeate the still, dry air.
The sun is ablaze in the American sky.
Majestic structures of glass and steel tower over the burning black asphalt of the modern freeway.
The time: 2007 A.D.
Fully clothed, some fully made up or making themselves up, showered and scented,
the commuters in their mechanized vehicles inch along, one behind the other, across the burning asphalt.
They are lined up in several rows, separated by painted lane markers.
Belt straps are pulled over one shoulder and across their chests.
Their hands are clenched tightly on the steering wheels.
The sound of blaring horns, and the responding angry cries and curses, permeate the heavy, smog filled air.

Martinis on Mars
by William R. Hicks
The plane takes off from LAX Airport
Elise and I ease back in our massage chairs
We read books, chat and listen to music
Eat, drink and watch movies
Search the web, e-mail, journal and sketch
It’ll be a long flight, a pretty long flight
Thankfully, this plane is like a cruise ship
With all the amenities, once we reach outer space
We’ve got our own room and bathroom
And large window to view the earth below
We can see the horizon curve more and more
As cities, countries and continents get smaller and smaller
The Earth becomes swirls of blue, green and white below
After awhile, the sky turns from light blue to black
And we are weightless
We’re free to float about the airship
Visit the bar, library, slots, or virtual game room
See a show, or whatever, it’s fun to move about the cabin
Lighter than a feather
Earth below is simply gorgeous!
It shrinks below us as the moon grows in size and brightness
We pass the dark side of the moon on our way to Mars
Using some highly advanced technology
We’re off at super speeds toward the red planet
Without atmosphere, there’s not much to see
Except blackness, and the Earth and Moon
Falling behind us
And the Sun as just a very bright star in the abyss
It’s a little creepy being out here in the void
After days and nights of cruising, we reach Mars
The beautiful red planet looms ahead of us
Photograph of Mars by NASA
It’s absolutely breath-taking!
We allow its gravity to pull us in
And we make our descent to the surface
The ship lands next to a giant clear dome
And we exit through a tube into the large hemispherical structure
We’re at the Mars Lava Lounge
With a circular bar in the middle
The room is filled with comfy-looking, spherical silver chairs
Around oval glass tables
Some chairs are
