About this ebook
Not everything that happens in a war zone is gruesome. Vietnam provided an opportunity for American youth to meet, often face-to-face, exotic animals, from leeches to Cobras and Bengal Tigers. The Nam also resulted in funny/odd/humorous events in the bush and back at base camp. These stories reflect some of the odd/weird/humorous events and encounters by members of Third Reconnaissance Battalion, Third Marine Division along the DMZ.
J. Michael Green

Foreword
This collection of stories is not about combat and blood and guts, but about the odd and weird, and even humorous, things that happen in a combat zone. My war was Vietnam and these stories are all true–at least the basic facts. Most of them concerned Marine Recon, where I had the privilege to serve during my war. I have fictionalized a story to fit the fact in an attempt to make the story more entertaining. The characters exist only in my mind.
The Marine Corps collectively is one of the most profane groups in the world. This collection was written for a general audience and I have purposely omitted the swearing for any younger or easily offended readers. It’s up to the reader to read between the lines to substitute or even add what may be more appropriate language.
For any combat veterans, please understand that I have not dwelled on the horror of war or the constant stress felt by an eight-man recon team operating deep in enemy territory. I have touched on the stress as well as the physical and mental hardships such as leeches, deadly snakes, tigers, heat, humidity, monsoon rains, and tropical diseases.
For any non-vets, operating in Vietnam was no walk in the park. Even the innocuous rice paddies could be deadly since they were fertilized with night soil
(human feces) and occasionally harbored deadly snakes and microbes that caused nasty tropical diseases. Strapping on ninety pounds of gear and climbing sixty degree slopes in the nineties
(90-plus degrees and 90 percent humidity) while trying to maintain stealth was physically exhausting.
The threat of walking into an ambush or meeting a large enemy force was mentally taxing and kept the adrenalin pumping. Surprise and reaction time more often than not decided the winner of such an encounter.
The last story, The Dixie Diner Patrol, was my first attempt at this series and was written in first person. It was published in 2011 by The Blue Guitar, an on-line magazine, and I decided not to re-write it with the same characters as the other stories but leave it as originally published.
Marine Recon was staffed largely by eighteen- to twenty-year old Americans armed with lethal weapons. All in all, they conducted themselves with aplomb and more than occasional acts of heroism. I am proud to have served with them.
Acknowledgements
When I began writing a few years ago, I realized my high school and college English was lying dormant in the far nooks and crannies of my brain. When I decided a refresher course was needed, I lucked out by discovering a local writer/editor/instructor in Harvey Stanbrough of Writing the World (harveystanbrough.com). More than refreshing my knowledge of English, he taught me many of the nuances of writing. Thanks and Semper Fi, Harvey.
Keri Mathews (kerimathews.com), was somewhat out of her element as an editor of military stories, but she did a good job telling an old man he was wrong in his use of punctuation and word usage. Thanks, Keri.
Jason Brown, a young friend and talented artist, is responsible for the cover art.
Lastly, my bride of forty years, Leslee, deserves many thanks for allowing me to play on the computer after dinner and on weekends while I wrote these stories.
