All characters and events in this story are fictional. Any resemblance to anyone living or dead is purely coincidental. While some of the places and organizations mentioned actually exist, they are used in an entirely fictional manner.

    Chapter 1

    A Monday in early May

Smoke detectors? What do I want with those? asked Fannie in disbelief. I can smell smoke very well on my own, Dana.

Dana dug her heels in. If that family in Mercer County had installed smoke detectors they could have survived that horrible fire in January.

"Well the Ordnung doesn’t permit them anyhow. We believe that we should rely on God not machines to protect us."

Dana gave up for the time being. Eli is looking well. It’s good to see him up and digging out in the garden. He looks like he’s put on some weight.

Fannie nodded lovingly at the mention of her husband of many years. It’s slow but steady progress. Thanks for sending us all that fresh fruit from Florida. We really enjoyed it. There was enough to share with the children. When is Larry coming home?

In a of couple weeks. He’s helping his daughter and her church out. They’ve undertaken a big project on human trafficking. We talk everyday. I enjoy time in Florida and still have some friends from when I taught there, but it was his home for most of his life. Plus he loves spending time with his grandson. I’ll have some time to get started on spring cleaning. Interested in lending a hand?

Sure, I can use the work. I don’t know if Eli will be able to get back to his carpentry on not. I can start anytime. If you’d rather work on your sermon for church on Sunday, I could work alone. Sometimes I get more done when we aren’t talking about everything going on around Solitude. What are you preaching about?

Dana smiled, Humor in the Bible. I thought I’d tell a couple funny family stories, then go into some funny but poignant episodes in the Old and New Testaments.

Fannie rolled her eyes. Now that’s a new one. You think the Bible is full of jokes? Come on Dana. Some of your ideas…. Fannie threw her hands in circles in the air behind her prayer bonnet.

Dana took a sip of her hot coffee and a bite of the warm cinnamon buns. I knew you’d say that. But I think you’ll be surprised. I’ll run it by you this week.

    Oh, I can hardly wait.

It looks like you’ve already done spring cleaning here, said Dana surveying the converted school house where Eli and Fannie lived. Everything is spotless and smells so fresh."

Well April was so warm, I just got in the mood to open the windows and start scrubbing.

It was never this clean when we went to school here, laughed Dana. Poor Mrs. Hoover had to do everything from shoveling snow to mowing the grass, tending the furnace and oh yes, teaching us rascals.

Fannie smiled. I still get up so early and with the children grown, I have a lot of time on my hands. What are your plans for the rest of this beautiful day? I’m going to plant some more onions.

I’m heading into Kittanning with Lynn from the Quilt Shop. She told me that while I was away, some sewage workers were digging around near the area where my cottage used to be. They discovered this tunnel or cave of some kind leading to the river. Some think it could have been a station on the Underground Railroad. They even found parts of a human skeleton there. I guess it’s pretty old. Sounds like a new mystery for us to solve Watson."

Fannie waved her hand at her longtime friend. We’ve had enough excitement around Solitude for a while. Let’s allow the experts to deal with those old bones. I have spoken with Lynn at the shop. She showed me this old quilt that has been in her family. She said it might have been actually used to help runaway slaves escape to freedom in Canada.

Dana nodded. Really, I’ve heard that some historians disagree on the validity of those quilt stories, but who knows? I guess Lynn and some group she’s working with would like to do a display and lead tours around some of the stations in this area. She wants me to join the group. I’d like to meet them first. In fact I just spoke with Lynn on the phone yesterday. You know she’s gotten some strange notions lately. She told me that she’s convinced that she’s had these past lives. I guess she saw a regression therapist in Pittsburgh. He or she hypnotized her and Lynn’s saying that she was a male slave catcher of fugitives on the railroad back in the 1850s.

Fannie looked shocked. Doesn’t she go to your church? How could a Christian believe such a thing?

Dana shrugged. "She claims that originally the Bible had references to reincarnation but that they were removed over the years. I plan to read up on that too. I’d never
