Queenie Reminisces
Queenie sat at the window looking out into the dim night. The moon was full, lighting up the back gardens with their lawns and shrubs, flower and vegetable beds. Queenie knew every inch of her territory which spread right down the street, although she usually stayed within a short distance of the house. She had her favourite places: the sheltering bushes when it was cold and frosty; the patio when its stones were warmed by the sun; the top of the shed when enemies were about. Each of these spots was a good vantage point, so that she was always ready to preen and greet whenever He strolled into view.
Tonight Queenie was on the watch as usual, but her people never let her out at night. It was the only thing she held against her master and mistress, who otherwise treated her fairly. If only she could go on the nocturnal prowl when she was in heat an erotic escapade with her beloved would be guaranteed, for she knew He was randy at night, sleepy by day. Imprisoned in her house from six at night to six in the morning, the best Queenie could hope for was a brief encounter at dusk or dawn, when a lovely brush against his lean, taut body, a sexy entwining of tails or a sweet jowl nuzzle was all that was on offer.
She knew he liked her, found her attractive. How could he not? Queenie had no pedigree, yet her special combination of Persian and alley cat had given her unique charms: exquisitely soft smoke-grey fur and eyes that could turn from yellow through hazel to green in an instant, revealing her fleeting emotions. Although she had quite a following amongst the neighbourhood cats, with all the other toms showing interest in her as the latest arrival, her heart belonged only to Tom.
He belonged to an old lady, three doors down, who fed him on a protein-rich diet of salmon, chicken, rabbit and cream that gave him a taut, muscular body and gorgeous coat that was always thick and glossy. Best of all, he was still as nature had made him. Most of the other so-called toms in the area had had the dreaded snip, turning them into docile wimps. Compared to them Tom was Supercat, magnificent and athletic, a handsome daredevil, infinitely more attractive than any other cat, which had led to him being a real philanderer, promiscuous and fancy free.
Which, Queenie reflected with a sigh, was exactly why she wanted him so much. Just one night with Tom would make her life worthwhile. If she were lucky enough to get kittens by him, her happiness would be complete, but how could that possibly happen? Whenever she was on heat her owners kept her indoors twenty-four seven. That meant she could only yearn after her would-be lover from afar, dreaming of Him night and day but only ever getting the faintest whiff of his erotic scent.
Now she cursed the double glass of the window, which meant she must rely more on sight than smell to alert her to Tom's appearance. The green slits of her eyes were trained like gunsights on the walls, fences, gates and trellises over which the cats normally progressed along the gardens. A fleet movement in the shadow of a wall as a cat jumped aloft caught her attention, but it was only Oddpaws, a tom with one white and one black front paw, out on the prowl. He was a good mouser, but Queenie had never fancied him even though he sniffed around her appreciatively whenever they came within scenting distance.
Another cat slunk along in the shadows - a female this time, called Ebony by her owner, black as charcoal and with a filthy temperament to match. She was jealous of Tom's interest in Queenie and would do anything to make sure he did not get too close to her rival. Once she had struck out at Queenie when Tom was in her garden and would have blinded her with her sharp claws, but fortunately she had managed to dodge in time. Tom had strolled over and cuffed her sharply after that, much to Queenie's satisfaction, but she knew that Ebony only hated her all the more now.
As she watched and waited, Queenie remembered the first time she and Tom had met and a warm thrill flooded through her. It was just after they had moved into their house from a poky little flat. Queenie had been thrilled by the expansion of her territory, and set about exploring it as soon as she was let out. Of course there had been a few tussles as she learnt which plots the other cats called their own, but she had been in no mood to dispute their territorial rights, only to establish her own. The feline borders bore no resemblance to those that humans had erected, of course, but were based entirely on rights of way and rites of passage, the more powerful males allowing females to cross their land providing they were compliant and respectful.
