Chapter 1
The Canvas for the Day
My favorite secret place. I felt a calling to return here. It was a place that I found one day after the monster came, when I needed to remove my heart from all of its surroundings, to release it, let it be free, where it didn’t have to dwell in the house of the monster, if only for a day.
As I stood overlooking the cliff, I couldn’t help but remember the dream; the chronic dream of falling off a cliff, a cliff that haunted my dreams every night. When sleep would finally come, it was interrupted with the event. I was falling, helpless, and unable to control it. I stood close near the edge and looked down. Standing there, I finally felt the ability to confront the enormous fear that took the shape of jagged rocks and a steep cliff. It was the dream of a woman who was fighting hard to survive. To put it on canvas that day felt cathartic and healing. I would need all the energy that this magical place had to give for such a brave task.
The beautiful North Shore of Lake Superior. I came here today because I needed a place far away from the world that was familiar. The chill of the air here is direct, beautiful. The late October wind was leaving its ominous message that winter was imminent, and the icy energy of change was reflected in the lake’s spirit. Its shores were spattered with ebony boulders, and the waves crashed hard onto them, as if it were a warning of transformation. The seasons were changing, and the world here was turning an indifferent cheek, as the summer winds had shifted. The water was chilling, preparing for its annual petrifaction of winter’s grandest of ice sculptures and snow-covered earth.
The beauty of the waters is so intense and severe, yet so beautiful and captivating, that it takes my breath away. It is powerful, but has a sense of tenderness. I feel it calling those who need its strength. It is a place of peace. Spiritual waters so grand, they needed to have a shoreline of jagged cliffs and eclectic clusters of beautiful ebony boulders to frame its magic. It was as if God just shook a saltshaker and it all landed where it needed it to be. It’s why I returned here. My desperate longing to know where to land.
The sunrise had made its voyage across the sky earlier in the day, leaving crimson brush strokes in its wake. The beauty of the canvas changed as the day did. A large ship carrying taconite was crawling slowly against the backdrop of the horizon; its monotone horn indicated its arrival into port. A slow moving cadence, that reminded me of a circus elephant, strong and slow, yet steadfast in its task. There were seagulls dotting the skies, and the smell of pine, and pungent earth had awakened my senses. It was God’s place. It was a place of enormous spirit, a place where prayers and thoughts were given over to the powers of the universe, a direct path to God. And this place of enormous energy seemed to understand its own power and welcomed those who came to seek answers.
And so this morning I took a long walk up a hillside path that led me to an open clearing that overlooked a beautiful cliff. I could hear the strong waves crashing against the rocks below. Standing there, gave me a feeling of comfort as I wrapped myself in its strength.
I looked for a place to rest and found it on a boulder. I climbed up on it, and sitting on it was surprisingly comfortable. It was as if it was meant to be sat upon. I really didn’t know what to do, except to breathe. I am ready with my canvas and brushes to capture it all… but in this moment; my hands are unable to move. The journey up here was mine, fulfilling a need to be alone. But my heart did not want to be alone. There was a wave of sadness that I did not expect. The moment had become too big emotionally to be here alone. My thoughts raced and ran rampant as to whom I wanted here with me. But I didn’t have the bravery to answer that for myself; yet.
It was a worn path that led me here, and from the beaten down earth and shoe prints, it was apparent that it had brought many up to the cliffs. But I was unprepared for who else was about to climb the path today. As I looked at the skies and took in the energy, I began to hear slow methodical footsteps. I saw a shadowed figure walking into the grassy clearing. The cadence in his stride had not changed and he was using a cane. He was a tall man, statuesque, and yet frail. His hands and arms would shake and twitch, but he seemed comfortable with it and it did not make him waver.
He walked over to the cliff, unaware of my presence. He stood lost in his thoughts, staring at the water as if he had found an old friend. He took out a small black book and held it in his hands and placed it over his heart. My presence here felt invasive and I felt frozen, trying not to move or make a sound. He finally turned away from the hill and our
