About this ebook
Atlanta homicide detective Charlie Callum has a great marriage to an interesting man, but not every woman is so blessed. An early morning call to a local art gallery brings her into a series of events that make her wonder if the matter of marriage is based in the vows or the things people DON'T say to each other.

A Matter of Marriage
Part I
Dearly Beloved…
Charlie Callum stretched her body long and almost moaned with pleasure. Relaxing, she turned her head and smiled, enjoying the early morning warmth of the bed and the nicely sculpted body at her side. Who would have guessed that two years past forty she would have had the good luck to find a man like him? Shifting under the covers, Martin Gomez slept peacefully, even as Charlie lifted the sheet to admire him.
Watching him sleep, Charlie’s smile widened. She liked seeing him at rest, relaxed and trusting in the abandon of sleep. When he was awake, he was different. Awake, his keen mind and artist’s eye changed him, but she liked that, too. Shrewd and deliberate, his sensitivity to tone and balance made him look at her in a way that made her feel as special as, no actually when he looked at her, she felt far more special and valuable to him than any of the fine art he was renowned for creating and authenticating.
Not that Charlie had ever needed a man to validate her, not even when she was a kid. She had always had a strong sense of self and known who she was. But Martin was different, a true renaissance man. He was an artist, a painter with more than enough skill to earn a substantial earning; he was also old-fashioned enough to be a little concerned about his wife when she’d decided to keep her own name when they married.
Charlie remembered trying not to give in to temper the night he laid his hand on hers and told her that she was going to be his wife. Then he said he wanted to follow tradition. Tradition? Without even letting him share his definition, something about the word rankled. Feeling mildly objectified, Charlie had reclaimed her hand and sat up tall in her chair. Sitting over dinner at Werner’s, she’d ignored the heavy silver and fine china. She’d simply planted her elbows on the deep-colored linen table cloth and leaned close to tell him how very untraditional she was. She was a cop, for pity’s sake – how much less traditional could a woman get? Once the words were past her lips, she waited for an explosion that never
