As much as I keep my eyes open for new books released by Ms. Cross, I wonder how I missed this since she is one of my top 10 favorite authors. But, I was so glad when I saw this because it answered some questions I was unsure about. This is the beginning of Birthright and the story of how William and Angie became such good friends. She found William after he had died and they were friends from there on. This might be a short story, but well worth it for the information it contained.

Forward

Afterlife is a short story companion to The Dark Gifts: Birthright. As more and more people read Birthright, I see a theme with reoccurring questions. The most commonly asked is, What’s up with William and Angie? How did they meet? This is their story.

As Afterlife takes place before the events in Birthright, it is completely unnecessary for you to have read it to enjoy this particular story.

Dedication

For my own personal William. I’m holding you to your promise.

Chapter One

William stared down at his blood-soaked corpse in complete disgust. Balls, he hissed as he swung his now transparent foot towards the rigid, dead leg. It was no great surprise when the intangible limb slid right through the body.

He sighed and began pacing back and forth. Every so often he’d glance back at the empty shell he used to call home. Leaned against a rotting tree trunk in the center of a vast coastal woodland with the eyes wide open, it seemed to watch him with mild amusement on its face. As unnerving as it was to have attained the ability to watch his carcass, it was even more so to have it staring back at him.

There has to be something I can do. He paused, crossed his arms, and scrutinized every inch of the cadaver. The Confederate uniform he’d been so proud to wear now sported dark stains around numerous rips and tears. The body really didn’t look all that beat up. Sure, there was a huge hole in the shoulder, but you couldn’t even see bones. And he knew from personal experience that the head wound looked far worse than it actually was. It was just barely a cut. More of a scratch really.

Finally making up his mind to take action, he closed his eyes, took a running leap, and jumped atop the body. His ghostly form slid right inside. He smiled as he opened his eyes. Balls again!

His leap had propelled him through the body and trunk, leaving him face down on the ground, six feet away from his desired location. Musical laughter flittered through the clearing and William jumped to his
